The 1980s gave us some truly unforgettable movies that are still beloved today. Films like The Terminator, Ghostbusters, The Goonies, and Die Hard are popular favorites that many people enjoy watching repeatedly. And now, one sci-fi classic from that decade—some even consider it the best movie of all time—is coming to Netflix, along with its two sequels.
Let’s talk about Back to the Future. Released on July 3, 1985, this Michael J. Fox classic remains a beloved film decades later. Its wildly imaginative story – a teenager accidentally traveling back to 1955 in a time-traveling car – shouldn’t have worked, but director Robert Zemeckis and producer Steven Spielberg combined their talents to create a truly special movie. It’s still considered one of the best time-travel films ever made and sets the standard for others in the genre.
Featuring Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, and Thomas F. Wilson, Back to the Future is a beloved film that both critics and audiences adore. It boasts impressive scores on Rotten Tomatoes (93% and 95%) and is often hailed as one of the greatest movies of all time, and even “the ultimate American summer blockbuster.” It’s easy to see why, considering the film earned a remarkable $388 million nearly forty years ago – which translates to over a billion dollars today. A blend of science fiction, comedy, and pure entertainment, Back to the Future will be available on Netflix starting November 1st. If you need a reminder of how fantastic it is, here’s a quick look at the story:
This beloved 1980s sci-fi film follows teenager Marty McFly (Fox) as he’s accidentally sent back to the 1950s. After a time-travel experiment gone wrong by his quirky scientist friend, Doc Brown (Lloyd), Marty finds himself in a DeLorean car and face-to-face with his young parents (Glover and Thompson). He must ensure they fall in love to secure his own existence, and also find a way to save Doc Brown’s life when he returns to the present.
‘Back to the Future’ Parts II & III Are Also Coming to Streaming

Universal
Good news for fans who want to watch the entire Back to the Future trilogy! All three movies – the original and its two sequels – will be available on Netflix next month. The sequels, released in 1989 and 1990, were filmed consecutively. Although critics had mixed reactions when they first came out, both sequels are now considered beloved classics.
Many fans consider Back to the Future Part II to be one of the best sequels of all time, and Part III is widely seen as a fitting end to the trilogy. Fortunately, the series hasn’t been rebooted or remade, and it seems unlikely to happen. Both screenwriter Bob Gale and director Robert Zemeckis have stated they don’t plan to revisit the story, with Zemeckis previously saying a remake “just isn’t going to happen.”
