‘The Running Man’ Stumbles at the Weekend Box Office as the Horsemen Ride to Victory

The new movie Now You See Me: Now You Don’t unexpectedly topped the box office this weekend, beating out Edgar Wright’s The Running Man, which starred Glen Powell. According to Deadline, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t earned an estimated $21.3 million domestically during its opening weekend. Globally, the film performed even better, bringing in $75.5 million, including $19.2 million from China. The movie cost approximately $90 million to produce.

The Running Man debuted at number two in theaters, earning $17 million – a bit less than the expected $20 million. It also brought in $11.2 million internationally, for a total worldwide opening weekend of $28.2 million. Meanwhile, Predator: Badlands saw a significant drop in viewers, falling 68% in its second weekend despite good reviews. So far, it’s made $66.3 million in the US and $136.3 million globally. Another new release, Keeper, opened at number seven with $2 million.

Although Now You See Me: Now You Don’t topped the box office this weekend, it actually had the lowest opening weekend numbers of any film in the Now You See Me series. The first Now You See Me movie opened with $29.3 million in 2013, and the second film, Now You See Me 2, earned $22.3 million in 2016. Both movies were very successful globally – the first made $351 million worldwide, and the second $334 million – which is a positive sign for the new film. A fourth Now You See Me movie is already being planned.

Despite its high $110 million budget, The Running Man had a strong opening weekend for director Edgar Wright, making it his second-biggest debut after Baby Driver ($20.5 million in 2017). While Scott Pilgrim vs. the World earned $10.6 million in 2010, it was considered a letdown at the time. The Running Man will need to perform well over the Thanksgiving holiday to recoup its costs.

According to Variety, movie theaters earned $75 million this weekend, which is $3 million more than the same weekend last year when Red One was released. Like last year, things are relatively quiet right now, but that’s expected to change soon. Wicked: For Good is predicted to have a very strong opening weekend in 2025, and Zootopia 2 is expected to be another hit over Thanksgiving. Several other films, including Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, The Running Man, and Predator: Badlands, are aiming to capitalize on the long holiday season before Avatar: Fire and Ash arrives in December.
