Fans of action movies have something to look forward to: Edgar Wright’s new film, based on a dystopian story, is expected to stream in January. The movie, directed by the filmmaker behind Baby Driver and Hot Fuzz, stars Glen Powell, who gained fame in Top Gun: Maverick. It was originally released in theaters last November and will reportedly be available on Paramount+ in early 2026.
Featuring William H. Macy, Lee Pace, Emilia Jones, Michael Cera, Daniel Ezra, Sean Hayes, Jayme Lawson, Colman Domingo, and Josh Brolin, The Running Man is a new take on Stephen King’s 1982 novel. It’s a reimagining of the popular 1980s action movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, updated for today’s audiences. Here’s a look at what the new The Running Man is all about…
Set in the not-so-distant future, The Running Man is the most popular show on TV – a brutal competition where participants, called Runners, have to stay alive for 30 days while being hunted by skilled killers. Every second is broadcast to a huge, eager audience, and the reward increases with each passing day. Ben Richards, a working-class man desperate to get help for his ill daughter, is persuaded by the show’s smooth but heartless producer, Dan Killian, to enter as a last hope. However, Ben’s courage, natural ability, and determination unexpectedly make him a favorite with viewers – and a danger to the show’s entire setup. As ratings climb, the stakes get higher, and Ben must not only evade the Hunters, but also overcome a country obsessed with seeing him fail.
Can ‘The Running Man’ Find Redemption on Streaming?

The action film The Running Man became available digitally earlier this month, and a new report from When to Stream says it will be added to Paramount+ on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. While Paramount+ and the studio haven’t officially confirmed this date, When to Stream is generally accurate with release information, and this timeframe fits with how quickly movies become available for streaming after their theatrical release.

As a huge action movie fan, I’m really excited to see The Running Man finally hit streaming! It’s always baffled me that it didn’t do better when it first came out. Despite having a great cast and being based on a Stephen King story, it only made around $69 million worldwide on a $110 million budget – a real box office disappointment. Critics were a bit divided too, with Rotten Tomatoes showing scores of 63% from critics and 78% from audiences. Even our own Julian Roman at MovieWeb had some interesting things to say about it…
Edgar Wright’s new film, The Running Man, is a more accurate adaptation of Stephen King’s 1982 novel than the popular 1987 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. While Wright successfully captures the book’s ideas about a troubled economy and oppressive government, the action scenes aren’t very exciting and the movie loses momentum, especially in a lengthy and confusing final act. The film starts strong as a smart, gripping, and darkly funny action thriller, but ultimately feels stretched and weak by the time it reaches its drawn-out conclusion.
