The Rookie Is Officially Fixing Season 8’s Biggest Fumble

Viewers will have to wait a little longer for the show’s return, but ABC surprised fans with a new version of The Rookie Season 8, Episode 10, “His Name Was Martin.” This extended cut significantly improves a moment that showrunner Alexi Hawley felt didn’t quite work in the original finale.

The director’s cut provides a fresh look at a particularly suspenseful moment from the show, and gives added depth to an emotionally significant scene. According to Noah Hawley, those few extra minutes allow the episode to unfold more naturally and create a different overall feeling.

The Rookie Fixes Its “Zombie” Scene

This is an extended version of the scene where Harper discovers a body, starts to investigate, and is then attacked by someone acting like a zombie. The original scene felt hurried when it first aired. The Hulu version gives it more room to unfold, creating more suspense by showing Harper and the body from different viewpoints before the attack happens.

You know, there was one scene I really focused on improving for the extended cut. It’s when Harper discovers the body near the building she eventually hides in. In the original version for the network, I just couldn’t get the tension right – that feeling of dread as she waited, with that dark doorway looming. But with the extra time in the extended cut, it finally works. It really builds the suspense the way I envisioned.

The Rookie Extended Episode Includes an Important Tim and Lucy Moment

The longer version of the show includes a scene that was cut before, which helps develop the connection between Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford. In this scene, Tim expresses his unease about the day to Lucy and Celina and offers to drive with Lucy. However, they both playfully dismiss his concerns.

Honestly, I felt like cutting that scene was the toughest part of the whole process. It really felt important to me, like it foreshadowed everything that was going to happen and created a sense of dread about what was coming.

The Rookie Season 3 Starts Shooting Soon

Noah Hawley shared that one of the enjoyable aspects of creating The Rookie is its flexibility in storytelling and overall feel. He specifically wanted episode 810 to be thrilling, frightening, and surprisingly touching. However, building suspense requires time, and he faced tough decisions during editing. While he rarely cuts scenes – perhaps only a handful across eight seasons – this episode presented a unique challenge due to length constraints.

Great news for fans of The Rookie: filming for season nine begins this Tuesday! You can currently watch The Rookie, including the director’s cut of “His Name Was Martin,” on Hulu.
