NBC is bringing back The Rockford Files. According to Deadline, the network has ordered a pilot episode for a reboot of the classic show, with writer Mike Daniels and the producers of Elementary—Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly—on board. Deadline reports this pilot is part of NBC’s plan to return to a more traditional pilot season, as they aim to develop two to three new comedies and three to four dramas for the next TV season.
I’ve always been a huge fan of The Rockford Files, and it’s incredible to think it was on NBC for six seasons, from 1974 to 1980! Created by Roy Huggins and Stephen J. Cannell, and starring the amazing James Garner, the show followed Jim Rockford after he was wrongly convicted and spent five years in San Quentin. Once he was pardoned, he started a new life as a private investigator, working right out of his trailer in Malibu. I’m really excited about this new take on the story, where Rockford trying to rebuild his life after prison puts him right in the middle of trouble with both the police and the criminal underworld in Los Angeles.
Following a ten-year dispute with Universal Pictures after the original series ended in 1980, James Garner returned to his role as Jim Rockford in a series of eight television movies between 1994 and 1999. These movies were partially inspired by successful reruns of The Rockford Files in the late 1980s and early 1990s, which reintroduced the show to audiences, especially a younger generation. Now, Universal Television and NBC are hoping a reboot of The Rockford Files will attract both those original fans who have grown up and a completely new audience.
NBC’s Past Attempts To Revive ‘The Rockford Files’

NBC
As a big fan of classic TV, I was a little surprised to hear NBC is considering a reboot of The Rockford Files. But honestly, Universal has had success with this before – remember the fantastic Battlestar Galactica reboot from the early 2000s? And CBS really went for it, building a whole interconnected TV universe out of updated versions of 80s hits like Hawaii Five-0, MacGyver, and Magnum P.I. Now, Universal Pictures is taking things a step further, bringing two more of their beloved TV shows, Miami Vice and Knight Rider, to the big screen. It’s interesting to see these old favorites getting a fresh look!

NBC and Universal Pictures have tried to bring back The Rockford Files before. In 2009, they filmed a pilot with Dermot Mulroney as Rockford, alongside Alan Tudyk, Melissa Sagemiller, and Beau Bridges, but NBC didn’t pick it up as a series. Later, in 2012, a movie remake starring Vince Vaughn was planned, but it was canceled in 2014 after the original star, James Garner, passed away. Let’s hope this latest attempt gets further than just a pilot.
