These days, movie franchises dominate the box office. But even before superheroes and comic book universes were everywhere, horror franchises consistently found ways to return. It’s unusual for a horror series to stay gone for long, and it appears that the popular modern horror franchise, The Purge, might be making a comeback.
Between 2013 and 2021, five Purge movies were released. After The Forever Purge appeared to remove the idea of a limited time for sanctioned crime, the series went quiet. But a sixth Purge film, previously in development, may be happening soon. Producer Brad Fuller recently told Comicbook.com that he and Purge creator James DeMonaco are working on the script, and DeMonaco might also direct the next installment, potentially with a returning actor. Fuller shared…
I’m a big fan of directors returning for sequels, and I think Frank Grillo is perfect for that franchise. We’re friends, and I’d love to see him reprise the role. James is currently writing a script, and while I haven’t read it yet, we’re all hoping to make another film happen.
The Purge movies aren’t exactly known for being smart, and I’ve always thought the idea behind them could have been explored much more effectively. However, they’re usually at least fun to watch, and the installments featuring Frank Grillo are definitely among the strongest in the series. That’s why the news that he might return is so exciting.
The Purge films have generally worked like a series of standalone stories, each taking place during a different Purge night and focusing on new characters. However, actor Frank Grillo was a consistent presence in Anarchy and Election Year, playing one of the closest things the movies have to a traditional hero. In the first of those films, he portrayed a man using the Purge as an opportunity to seek revenge for his son’s death – a role that felt like a test run for a character like The Punisher.
Previously, it was suggested that Grillo would return for another Purge film. A few years ago, DeMonaco discussed the setting for a new Purge movie, envisioning a future where the United States has dissolved and people have organized themselves into different cultural groups.
Brad Fuller has indicated that a sixth Purge movie isn’t likely to begin filming soon, meaning it won’t be released in 2026. However, the project is still being developed, and the team is working to make it a reality. Hopefully, we’ll see another Purge film eventually!
