‘The Punisher’ Star’s “Old-Fashioned” & “Explosive” Action Sequel That’s a Hit on Streaming

Jon Bernthal really established himself as an action movie star when he played The Punisher in the series that was connected to, but also separate from, the MCU. Now, his version of the character is officially part of the MCU thanks to Daredevil: Born Again. After appearing in the original Daredevil and The Punisher series, and before Daredevil: Born Again and the new MCU Punisher project, Jon Bernthal starred in what many consider one of the best action films of 2025. That film was the highly anticipated sequel to Ben Affleck’s 2016 crime thriller, The Accountant. Bernthal had a brief appearance in the first movie, but played a much bigger role in the 2025 sequel, bringing a similar style of action to the role as he did with The Punisher. The Accountant 2 is currently available to stream on Prime Video and has quickly become another hit.

Following the success of Ben Affleck’s role as Christian Wolff, the data is in, and The Accountant 2 is now the 10th most-watched movie on Prime Video worldwide. The film, directed by Gavin O’Connor, brings back Affleck as the autistic accountant and skilled killer, Christian, who reconnects with his long-lost brother, Brax (Bernthal), leading to more action and calculated chaos. Here’s what the movie is about, according to the official description:

Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is exceptionally skilled at unraveling complicated puzzles. When a former colleague is killed, leaving a puzzling clue to “find the accountant,” Wolff feels driven to investigate. Understanding he needs to take things further, Wolff enlists the help of his long-separated and incredibly dangerous brother, Brax (Jon Bernthal). Working alongside U.S. Treasury Deputy Director Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), they expose a dangerous plot, but in doing so, they become the targets of a merciless group of assassins who will do anything to protect their hidden truths.

Despite the name The Accountant 2, the movie didn’t perform as well financially as hoped after being released in theaters. It earned $103 million globally, but cost $80 million to make. While it didn’t lose money, accountants wouldn’t be thrilled with those results. Interestingly, viewers really enjoyed the film, giving it a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. People loved the film’s “old-fashioned style of action,” the “explosive shootouts,” and the “strong chemistry between Affleck and Bernthal.” Critics, however, were much more critical, giving it a 75% rating.

Will Jon Bernthal Return for ‘The Accountant 3’?

Even though The Accountant 2 didn’t make a huge profit, The Accountant 3 is happening. Director Gavin O’Connor has confirmed this, and he says Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal are expected to be back for another film. O’Connor explains that the story was originally conceived as a three-part series, so hopefully, the movies can continue for at least one more installment.

The Accountant wasn’t a typical movie series. The first film, released in 2015, did fairly well, earning $155 million with a production budget of around $44 million. Interestingly, while both critics and viewers seemed to enjoy the second movie more, the original The Accountant received a 53% rating from critics and a slightly better 77% rating from audiences.
