HBO Max’s The Pitt is a realistic medical drama set in a busy Pittsburgh emergency room. Starring Noah Wyle as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, the show follows a team of doctors and nurses as they handle life-or-death situations, deal with hospital issues, and face their own personal problems during long, challenging 15-hour shifts.
I recently caught up with Jamie Hatosy, who plays Dr. Jack Abbot on The Pitt. He shared some interesting thoughts about the buzz surrounding his character and the dedicated night shift team at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. While there’s no official spinoff in the works yet, Hatosy definitely hinted that the idea of expanding the show’s universe has been floated around internally. It seems like the network is at least considering giving these nighttime heroes their own spotlight, and honestly, I think that’s a fantastic idea!
We’ve been discussing the possibility of adding a late-night show. It could be a great opportunity to explore a different and more engaging style.
I’ve really become a fan of Dr. Abbot, even though he’s not in many scenes. He’s a doctor working the night shift, and it’s fascinating to see that side of the hospital – it’s so different from what we usually see on The Pitt. The show mostly focuses on the busy day shift, but those little glimpses of what happens overnight with characters like him have really piqued my interest. I’m definitely curious to learn more about that whole nighttime world within the show!
The actor believes focusing the show on a nighttime crew creates exciting possibilities for new storylines. A series set during these late-night hours could have a distinct mood and rhythm, capitalizing on the inherent unpredictability of that time. This shift could also offer a fresh perspective on the characters, their relationships, and the emotional impact of the cases within the larger story universe.
He also suggested the unique personalities of people who prefer working nights are a key reason why a spinoff could work. He believes those who choose late shifts often have interesting, unconventional qualities that could make for compelling stories and differentiate the new show from the original.
Dr. Abbot preferred working the night shift because it attracted a unique and somewhat unconventional team.
Peter Hatosy’s work on the medical drama goes beyond just acting. During the second season, he directed the ninth episode, called “3:00 P.M.” He was hesitant at first about handling both acting and directing, but he ended up enjoying the experience.
The actor’s performance as Dr. Abbot has been highly praised. He won an Emmy Award in 2025 for his guest appearance in a drama series, and this recognition confirmed how powerful his acting was and how much viewers of The Pitt loved the character.
