Be warned, this article reveals major plot points from Season 2, Episode 3 of The Pitt. The episode introduced a new central conflict following the events of the PittFest shooting, though the motivation behind it feels a little unclear. After focusing on new romantic relationships in the first two episodes, this week’s installment returned the spotlight to the patients and staff of Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Thankfully, the shift in focus didn’t slow down the show’s momentum at all.
Episode 3 of The Pitt season 2 featured several key developments, including new information about patients Kylie and Michael, a moving poem by Dr. Langdon, and a challenging case involving a college student. As usual, the episode concluded with a major cliffhanger – a code black originating from another hospital – that could significantly impact the rest of the season.
What A Code Black Is & What It Means For PTMC In The Pitt Season 2
As a big fan of the show, I was really on the edge of my seat at the end of The Pitt’s latest episode! It ended with Dana getting this frantic phone call, and after a moment of shock, she revealed that Westbridge Hospital was completely overwhelmed – a ‘code black’ situation. That meant all their patients were being diverted to Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, and honestly, it couldn’t have come at a worse time. PTMC was already swamped dealing with injuries from the Fourth of July celebrations, so this is just going to push them to their absolute limit. I’m really worried about how they’re going to cope!
In U.S. hospitals, a “code black” usually signals that the hospital is diverting most patients due to various issues (according to Nursing CE Central). These codes can be issued for many reasons. A common example, like during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, is when a hospital runs out of available beds and can’t accept new patients.
The staff at PTMC speculated about why Westbridge Hospital issued a code black. Robby thought it might be a simple issue like a plumbing leak, forcing them to close off parts of the hospital. Dr. Al-Hashimi joked that many Westbridge doctors might have called in sick to celebrate the Fourth of July, leading to severe understaffing. Regardless of the reason, the situation is creating a major burden for PTMC, as they’re now responsible for taking on Westbridge’s extra patients.
Dr. McKay’s Head Trauma Patient May Have A Behavior-Altering Tumor

As a big fan of The Pitt, I have to say episode 3 of season 2 was a bit slow on the updates for our doctors and nurses, but wow, the patients really got some shocking news! One storyline that particularly grabbed me was Michael Williams, who’s being treated by Dr. McKay for a head injury. The episode dropped a huge bomb on him – a CT scan showed he has a significant mass in the front part of his brain.
Everyone immediately suspected Michael might have brain cancer, but Dr. McKay needs more tests before making a diagnosis. It seems likely the growth is responsible for his sudden and dramatic changes in behavior. Dr. McKay’s next step is to admit Michael for a biopsy – a small procedure to take a sample of the mass and find out if it’s cancerous. During this episode, Michael’s ex-wife also came to the hospital, as she’s still listed as his emergency contact.
Michael’s ex-wife shared that his personality changed significantly before their divorce. She described him as once being very kind, but he became increasingly irritable, ultimately leading to their separation. Now, with the discovery of a mass in his frontal lobe, she believes this explains his changing moods. This development will likely add a layer of sadness and complexity to the upcoming second season of The Pitt.
Dr. Santos’ Patient Wasn’t Being Abused, She Had ITP

I was really shocked to learn what was going on with Kylie Connors! Dr. Santos was worried about potential abuse because she had so many bruises and her dad was known for being rough. But it turns out, episode 3 of The Pitt season 2 revealed the bruising isn’t from abuse at all – she has a condition called ITP, which affects her immune system. It’s such a relief to know the truth, and it’s heartbreaking that people jumped to conclusions.
ITP, or immune thrombocytopenia, is a condition where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys platelets, which are needed for normal blood clotting. This can cause easy bruising and bleeding. In Kylie’s case, ITP caused significant bruising and blood in her urine, even from minor injuries like those she got playing soccer. Fortunately, a blood test confirmed the diagnosis before anyone suspected abuse, though the situation still had difficult moments.
When Kylie’s father arrived at the hospital, he became very angry with his girlfriend after learning they playfully wrestle. Once the doctor, Santos, explained Kylie’s condition, ITP, and the treatment plan, the father attempted to apologize to his girlfriend. However, she was deeply hurt by the accusation that their playful wrestling was abusive and left the hospital, ending the situation on a disappointing note.
Dr. Robby Treated A Survivor Of The 2018 Tree Of Life Synagogue Shooting
In the third episode of The Pitt season 2, a new patient brought a powerful emotional element to the show. Dr. Robby treated Yana Kovalenko, who suffered a severe burn after accidentally spilling boiling water. During their conversation, Robby learned that Yana was also a survivor of the tragic 2018 shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh.
The tragic shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue was a real event in which a gunman attacked Jewish worshippers, resulting in eleven deaths and deeply impacting the Pittsburgh Jewish community (according to ABC News). In the fictional story The Pitt, a character named Yana survived the shooting but continues to struggle with PTSD. This trauma is shown when she accidentally spills her water after hearing firecrackers on the Fourth of July.
Yana uncovered details hinting at trouble for Robby. Many viewers believe he might crash his motorcycle, especially since he often rides without a helmet. Yana dismissed his plans for a break as a mid-life crisis, and earlier in the show, Robby was dishonest about wearing one. It appears season 2 of The Pitt is strongly suggesting something bad will happen to Robby and his motorcycle.
Robby, Al-Hashimi & Mohan Missed A Woman’s Internal Bleeding While Treating Her Husband
This week on PTMC, two new patients presented with challenging medical cases, bringing both hope and heartbreak. Doctors Robby, Al-Hashimi, and Mohan treated Mark Yee, who was left seemingly paralyzed after a car accident. After careful examination, they discovered the cause was hypokalemic periodic paralysis – a condition affecting his potassium levels – which was responsible for his paralysis.
The doctors explained that Mark had a very rare condition called hypokalemic periodic paralysis, often triggered by stress, but it could be treated. Robby, Al-Hashimi, and Mohan successfully stabilized him. Sadly, while they were caring for Mark, his wife, Nancy, passed out in the emergency room. They quickly discovered she had internal injuries from the crash, which they hadn’t noticed earlier because she had refused a full medical check-up.

After waking up, Mark asked Dana to film a video of him apologizing to his wife. He hadn’t appreciated her trying to help him relax with a vacation, and he wanted to send the apology after her surgery. This was a particularly touching moment in season 2 of The Pitt, and things could become even more heartbreaking if Nancy doesn’t make it through the operation. The situation could also lead to a malpractice suit against the doctors at The Pitt.
