The Pitt Has Already Been Renewed For Season 3, And I Have Guesses About When It Will Take Place

Following a fantastic first season, Season 2 of The Pitt is scheduled to air in 2026. Even better, HBO Max has already renewed the show for Season 3! With that news, and knowing Season 2 will be set around the Fourth of July and just before a character named Robby takes a leave of absence, I’m starting to think about when Season 3 might take place.

The Pitt Has Been Renewed For Season 3

Before the show became available on streaming platforms again, critics gave Season 2 of The Pitt high marks. As a big fan of the series from 2025, I wasn’t surprised to hear the positive response. Even better, it was renewed for a third season the night before the premiere.

HBO CEO Casey Bloys announced the exciting news on Wednesday, January 7th, at the Season 2 premiere of The Pitt, according to Variety. The announcement came just before the new season became available to viewers and during a period of significant awards success for the show.

The show had a hugely successful 2025, winning several Emmys, including awards for Best Drama and Best Lead Actor. It continued to receive recognition with wins at the Critics’ Choice Awards and a Golden Globe nomination in 2026, all while building a dedicated fanbase.

As I mentioned before, the renewal of The Pitt isn’t a surprise. Now that Season 3 is confirmed, we can start thinking about where and when it might be set.

The Days I Think Season 3 Of The Pitt Could Take Place On

Okay, so in the trailer for Season 2 of The Pitt, things are definitely shifting for Robby. He mentions a new attending, Dr. Al-Hashimi, is covering his duties while he takes a break – he calls it a “little sabbatical.” Then someone asks if this is his last shift, and he basically confirms it… at least for a while. Apparently, according to TV Insider, this isn’t just a short break – Robby’s planning a three-month motorcycle trip starting right after his shift on the Fourth of July. Sounds like he needs some time to ride things out!

Considering all of that, let’s look at a couple more points. Season 2 began on Langdon’s first day after completing rehab, and Season 1 focused on the first days of several characters at The Pitt. So, it seems reasonable to assume Season 3 will take place on Robby’s first day back after his recent trip.

If he takes the entire three months off and doesn’t come back sooner, he’d likely be back at work around the start of October. Considering that, and looking at other possibilities, here are a few possible return dates I’ve come up with:

  • October 4: That would be exactly three months after Robby leaves.
  • October 31: If they want to keep with the holidays, and Robby extends his sabbatical, Halloween would be a great day for the show to come back.
  • Sometime in September: What if Robby cuts his trip short and returns early? If I’m being honest, the guy seems like he’d be bad at taking a vacation.

Honestly, I’m still not sure exactly when we’ll see Season 3 of The Pitt, but I have a strong feeling it could start on the very day Robby returns to work. I think it’d be amazing to see how his time away has affected him, and how he reacts to all the changes at the hospital while he was gone. It just feels like that setup would make for really compelling television, and I’m excited to see if that’s the direction they go in.

Before the new season begins, there’s a special Fourth of July episode of The Pitt! Season 2 of this popular medical drama starts tonight on HBO Max, and new episodes will air every Thursday at 9 p.m. Eastern Time.
