The 2000 disaster film The Perfect Storm, starring George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg, is currently popular on streaming services. While reviews were mixed when it first came out, the movie was a commercial success, earning over $328 million worldwide.
As of today, January 14th, The Perfect Storm is the 10th most popular movie on Peacock in the U.S., according to data from FlixPatrol. It’s been in the top 10 for the last five days. Currently, it’s behind Bugonia at number one, as well as Shrek Forever After, Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2, The Proposal, Despicable Me 4, Shark Tale, The Tomorrow War, and HIM at number nine.
Directed by Wolfgang Petersen and based on the book by Sebastian Junger, The Perfect Storm tells the story of the fishing boat Andrea Gail and its crew, who disappeared in a massive storm in 1991. The film stars George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg as the fishermen on board. The screenplay was written by William D. Wittliff, with additional writing by Bo Goldman.
The film The Perfect Storm features a strong cast, including John C. Reilly, Diane Lane, William Fichtner, John Hawkes, Allen Payne, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Karen Allen, Bob Gunton, Christopher McDonald, Dash Mihok, Josh Hopkins, Michael Ironside, Cherry Jones, Rusty Schwimmer, Janet Wright, Todd Kimsey, Joseph D. Reitman, and Sandy Ward.
While “The Perfect Storm” featured impressive special effects and sound design – earning two Oscar nominations – critics found the movie lacked compelling characters and a strong storyline. It received a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many viewing it as a visually exciting but ultimately shallow experience.
Roger Ebert was a strong advocate for The Perfect Storm, praising it as a skillfully made, thrilling experience and giving it a rating of three and a half stars in his review for the Chicago Sun-Times.
Despite mixed reviews, The Perfect Storm performed well at the box office, earning $328.7 million and ranking as the eighth highest-grossing film of 2000. It was behind Mission: Impossible 2 (No. 1 with $546 million), Gladiator ($465M), Cast Away ($429M), What Women Want ($374M), Dinosaur ($349M), How the Grinch Stole Christmas ($346M), and Meet the Parents ($330M), but ahead of films like X-Men ($296M) and What Lies Beneath ($291M), which rounded out the top ten.
Over 25 years after its initial release, the hit movie The Perfect Storm is gaining popularity again on Peacock. It’s a chance to remember what it was like to see disaster movies in theaters, and how we now typically enjoy them – streaming at home.
