Imagine the movie Shutter Island taking place during World War II. That’s how one critic describes The Tank, a German film that’s surprisingly become the most popular movie on Prime Video right now, despite being largely unknown. It’s currently number one worldwide on Prime Video, though in the U.S., it’s right behind Liam Neeson’s The Naked Gun.
The movie Tank (known as Der Tiger in its original language) is an anti-war film that’s received a 64% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it hasn’t received any critical reviews and isn’t generating much buzz. It’s the kind of film that appears on streaming services and attracts a large audience simply because of its genre and prominent placement on lists of new releases, like the ‘New to Prime’ section.
The Tank is directed by Dennis Gansel and stars David Schütter, Laurence Rupp, Leonard Kunz, Andre Hennicke, and Sebastian Urzendowsky among others. The synopsis of the movie reads:
In 1943, on the brutal Eastern Front, a five-man German Tiger tank crew is dispatched on a clandestine mission far behind enemy lines. As they venture into dangerous territory, they battle not only the enemy but also their own inner demons. Fueled by methamphetamine issued by the German army, their assignment spirals into a harrowing descent into darkness.
In July 2025, the film Der Tiger will make history as the first Amazon Original movie released in German cinemas. Philip Pratt, Head of German Originals at Amazon MGM Studios, explained, “We were immediately captivated by the idea Dennis Gansel and producer Frank Kusche presented to us and knew we had to bring this unique story to the big screen.” He added that Gansel, an award-winning director known for films like Napola and The Wave, brings a sensitive and insightful approach to the subject matter.
‘The Tank’ Is a “Must Watch” but You Will Not Be Prepared for the Ending
I know The Tank isn’t flawless, but I’ve read so many reviews praising how intense it is. People are really connecting with how realistically it shows the huge mental strain soldiers face in war, and how authentic the setting feels. It’s a powerful film, even if it’s not perfect.
Critics are calling this film a standout, even for those who don’t typically enjoy war movies, with some declaring it the best tank-based thriller since Fury. However, many viewers felt the strong first two acts were ruined by a predictable and disappointing ending. Spoilers follow if you continue reading.
Reviews of the film on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb (where it has a score of 6.6) consistently point to one thing: its ending is considered shockingly bad, but also strangely memorable.

One IMDb user, Hoops-85, gave the movie two stars and was highly critical of its ending, calling it a predictable and terrible cliché. They were shocked the filmmakers used such an overdone plot device, and felt it invalidated the entire movie. They advised others not to waste their time because of this disappointing conclusion.
It’s frustrating when a movie struggles to finish its story and resorts to a convenient, unbelievable ending. However, this film delivers a powerful and impactful story before that point. If you can look past the weak conclusion, you might find it’s a movie worth watching and appreciating.
