Brendan Fraser is returning as the adventurous Rick O’Connell in a new Mummy movie, marking his first time in the role in 17 years. Fraser has said this is the Mummy film he’s always envisioned, but it was never produced until now. This comes after an unsuccessful attempt to reboot the franchise with Tom Cruise in the 2010s.
The biggest news is that Brendan Fraser will be returning for another Mummy movie, and Rachel Weisz, his co-star and love interest, is joining him! While no other original cast members have officially signed on yet, there’s talk that more familiar faces might appear, with the goal of making the fourth Mummy film a really enjoyable experience.
Brendan Fraser As Rick O’Connell
Brendan Fraser is confirmed to return as Rick O’Connell in the next Mummy movie. He’s spoken about how excited he is to be back and explained why the previous attempt with Tom Cruise didn’t quite work. Fraser believes Mummy films should be adventurous and fun, rather than scary horror movies.
That’s very telling, and it suggests fans of the original Mummy films will likely enjoy this new one as much as the first two. Reports indicate this movie will continue the story from the first two, disregarding the third installment. Brendan Fraser has also stated he’s finally getting to tell the story he envisioned after those initial films.
Fraser explained that Rick’s trip to China in the third movie was mainly to coincide with the Olympics. He views that film as separate from the main series, but now he has the opportunity to pick up the original story with The Mummy 4.
Rick O’Connell starred as the adventurous hero in the three Mummy films. Similar to Indiana Jones, he’s a treasure hunter who finds himself battling Imhotep, a mummy brought back to life, during a dangerous expedition.
The movie The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor concluded with Rick and Evelyn O’Connell, along with their son Alex, setting off to find the legendary Shangri-La. However, the upcoming new movie might not acknowledge this previous adventure, leaving the fate of this version of their son uncertain.
Rachel Weisz As Evelyn O’Connell
The biggest news about the cast of The Mummy 4 is the return of Rachel Weisz as Evelyn O’Connell. She originally played Evelyn Carnahan in the first movie, where she was a British librarian and Egyptologist who fell in love with Rick. Along with her brother, Jonathan, she joined Rick on his journey to the lost city of Hamunaptra.
I loved seeing Evelyn back in the second movie, now as a wife and mom! It was so cool learning she wasn’t just an archaeologist, but actually the reincarnation of Princess Nefertiri – the Pharaoh’s daughter Imhotep and Anck-su-namun wronged. It really leaned into everything that makes The Mummy movies so great, with all that ancient Egyptian history and destiny stuff.
Many fans were upset when Rachel Weisz left the Mummy series and Maria Bello took over in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Now, with a potential fourth Mummy movie in the works, it’s unclear what happened to Evelyn and Rick O’Connell, but fans are thrilled that Rachel Weisz is returning to her role as Evelyn, bringing back a piece of the original films.
Whether or not Rachel Weisz and Rick are a couple in the story, her return is a major improvement for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Replacing her with another actress was a poor decision, and even though Maria Ballo is talented, she couldn’t recreate the strong connection Weisz and Fraser had in the original movies.
John Hannah Rumored As Jonathan Carnahan
I’m really hoping we’ll see John Hannah back as Jonathan Carnahan in the new Mummy movie! With Rachel Weisz definitely returning as Evelyn, it would be amazing to have her brother along for the adventure. While nothing’s official yet, he’s been mentioned in casting discussions more than anyone else from the original films, which is a really good sign!
I was so thrilled to see him return! He really filled the void left by Fraser and Weisz, becoming the perfect, lovable goofball and providing much-needed humor during all the intense action. Honestly, the playful back-and-forth he had with everyone else was a highlight, and it just wouldn’t feel right seeing Evelyn without her brother around – they’re a classic duo!
Jonathan, who last appeared in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, made it clear he wanted no part of mummies or the supernatural. Still, bringing him back for The Mummy 4 could be really fun and it would be great to see his character again.
Arnold Vosloo Rumored As Imhotep
Every Mummy movie needs a strong villain, and there’s a suggestion that the fourth film could bring back the original antagonist. The great thing about this series is that it’s easy to resurrect a defeated, deceased villain—after all, they were already dead when the first movie began!
Arnold Vosloo famously portrayed the mummy Imhotep in the first two “Mummy” films. According to the story, Imhotep was a powerful priest of Osiris around 12,900 BC. He was cursed and transformed into a mummy after attempting to bring back Anck-su-namun, the mistress of Pharaoh Seti. While he was last seen in the second movie, in the third film, Rick O’Connell claims to have defeated him on two separate occasions.
The second movie concluded with Anck-su-namun’s betrayal of Imhotep, leading to his descent into the Underworld. Just having Imhotep return for another showdown with Rick O’Connell would be a major draw for audiences.
You know, one character people often forget about is Patricia Velásquez, who played Anck-su-namun. Her story was really interesting – she had a past connection with Evelyn, as it turned out she was a previous lover of Imhotep, and that storyline wrapped up in The Mummy Returns. While Imhotep went off to the Underworld, Anck-su-namun had a much more gruesome end, falling into a pit of scorpions. It was pretty intense!
Oded Fehr Rumored As Ardeth Bay
Just as it would be great to have John Hannah back as Jonathan Carnahan for some laughs, Oded Fehr should return as Ardeth Bay to remind us of the exciting adventures Rick and Evelyn O’Connell shared. It was a letdown that Ardeth Bay wasn’t in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and the movie never explained why.
Ardeth Bay led the Medjai, ancient protectors who had served Egypt’s pharaohs for generations. In the first film, his mission was to prevent the revival of Imhotep, no matter what. But instead of killing Rick, Evelyn, and Jonathan, he decided to team up with them and help defeat Imhotep.
In The Mummy Returns, Rick O’Connell returned to action to prevent the Scorpion King from being unleashed, and then to battle the resurrected Imhotep and his lover, Anck-su-namun. He didn’t appear in the third Mummy film, which fit the story since it didn’t involve Imhotep at all.
I’ve been seeing some exciting buzz online – apparently Oded Fehr might be coming back for the new movie! He’s mentioned before he’d totally be up for reprising his role if another Mummy film happened, and honestly, having him back would make it feel like a real reunion with the original cast, instead of just a sequel that barely connects to what we loved before.
If Imhotep returns as the villain in The Mummy 4, the movie will likely need to include Ardeth Bay as well. His story is closely linked to Imhotep’s, and fans would love to see him team up with Rick O’Connell again.
Dwayne Johnson Rumored As The Scorpion King
Okay, so a The Mummy 4 comeback that would be amazing, but feels super unlikely, is Dwayne Johnson as The Scorpion King. It’s wild to think that The Mummy Returns was actually his very first acting gig! Back then, he was still known as ‘The Rock’ – they even credited him that way! It would be a fun nod to the past if he ever returned.
His initial appearance received a lot of criticism, largely due to the unnatural, video game-style animation used for his character. While he had a chance to shine in the spin-off film, The Scorpion King, it wasn’t as successful as the first two Mummy movies, either in terms of audience reception or reviews.
Bringing Dwayne Johnson back for another film could be a gamble. While he’s usually seen as a hero, his recent work suggests a tendency to take control, and The Mummy 4 doesn’t need someone making a lot of demands on set. It’s important that this movie remains focused on Brendan Fraser’s character.
Casting Dwayne Johnson in a major role in the new Mummy movie would likely be a misstep. However, a brief cameo or a small part could be a fun nod to fans of the older films. Either way, adding Johnson to the cast of The Mummy 4 would definitely boost its star power.
