For decades, fans have deeply explored their favorite franchise in all its forms. While the original animated series and its follow-up, The Legend of Korra, established the foundation for countless stories within that world, they aren’t the only way to experience it.
I’ve been a huge fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender for ages, and it’s been amazing to see the story expand beyond the original show! We’ve gotten so much extra content over the years – novels, comics, graphic novels, even concerts! And of course, there have been a bunch of Avatar video games too. Honestly, they haven’t always gotten the attention they deserved…but that’s starting to change, and I’m really excited about it!
Avatar: The Last Airbender’s History in Video Games
Given how quickly Avatar: The Last Airbender became a cultural phenomenon, it wasn’t surprising when the first video game adaptation was released in 2006. The game, which took place between the first and second seasons of the show (except for the PC version, which had a unique story), was the first of three action-adventure games and launched a whole series of *Avatarbased video games.
Over the past two decades, the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender has expanded into video games, including the online game Avatar: Legends of the Arena. However, most Avatar games haven’t fully captured the immersive experience fans desired, though that could soon change.
Why 2025 Has Been Better for Avatar: The Last Airbender Fans Than They Realize
While 2025 hasn’t brought many new movies or shows based on Avatar: The Last Airbender, it’s been a great year for the franchise in the world of video games. A highlight was the release of the Avatar: The Last Airbender set for Magic: The Gathering, which added many familiar characters, creatures, and ideas to the popular card game.
Tilting Point recently launched Avatar: Realms Collide, a mobile game where players construct a city, collect characters from the Avatar universe, and battle enemies to protect their territory. However, the game doesn’t offer a particularly complex experience, and it’s not quite the Avatar game fans were hoping for.
Despite the games released this year, what truly makes 2025 exceptional for Avatar: The Last Airbender in gaming isn’t the titles themselves. It’s the announcements made throughout the year – and the exciting future they promise for fans – that have made 2025 a standout year for the franchise.
It’s great news that Avatar: The Last Airbender is coming to Roblox next year, but that’s actually a relatively small part of what fans of the series have to look forward to in 2025. Some of the other announcements were so major, it’s easy to have overlooked the Roblox news entirely.
The Future For Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Gaming Franchise
I recently got a look at the new 2D fighter from Gameplay Group International, and it seems like exactly what fans have been hoping for. The game boasts beautiful, hand-drawn characters and stages. What really stood out was the “Flow System” – it’s a core mechanic that focuses on movement and cleverly connects to each character’s individual fighting style and how they utilize their powers.
Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a fighting game focused on bending the elements, just like in the original series. It’s made to be fun for both people new to fighting games and experienced players. The game takes inspiration from classic fighting games but also introduces fresh ideas in how characters move, look, and fight.
I was really impressed by this game – it feels incredibly smooth and reacts perfectly to your actions, and it’s clearly built with fairness in mind. It really makes you think about why you’re fighting. Visually, it’s stunning – everything is hand-drawn in 2D, and it captures the look and feel of the original series beautifully, with really expressive animation.
Just two months after the initial announcement, Isabella Boettcher, Creative Executive at Avatar Studios, and Joan Hilty, Executive Story Editor, shared a quick update. Boettcher assured fans that while there’s still a lot of work ahead, they’re making progress and committed to doing things the right way. They wanted fans to know that new developments are underway.
Hilty explained that previous Avatar games simply retold the stories we’ve already seen. While enjoyable, he pointed out you can just watch the series if that’s all you want. But the upcoming games, created by a talented team, will let players experience events across different time periods – something the series and books can’t offer.
I’ve been watching the development of the Avatar: The Last Airbender game at Paramount Game Studios, and even though details are still scarce, I’m feeling optimistic. People who really know the Avatar world at Avatar Studios have been saying great things about the project, which tells me it’s in good hands. Plus, it feels like the Avatar franchise is finally taking gaming seriously – it hasn’t always been a priority, but now it seems to be. Considering all of this, 2025 is shaping up to be a really good year for Avatar: The Last Airbender fans, maybe even better than they realize.
