Despite not performing well in theaters last year, the movie Tron is finding new success as a popular streaming title on Disney+. It seems there’s still a strong audience for this sci-fi film.
Only two days after its release on Disney+, Tron: Ares has become the most-watched film globally on the platform. Data from FlixPatrol shows the movie is either number one or number two in nearly every country where Disney+ is available. However, viewers in Greece and Malta haven’t shown much interest. While Tron: Ares did make the Top 10 in those countries, it hasn’t climbed higher than ninth place.
Okay, so Tron: Ares is doing surprisingly well on streaming, which is a bit of a turnaround considering how it bombed in theaters. It actually did win the opening weekend, but it didn’t make nearly as much as Tron: Legacy did back in 2010. Legacy opened with $44 million, but Ares only pulled in $33.5 million. Ultimately, Ares made about $142 million worldwide, which is a huge difference compared to Legacy‘s $410 million. It’s cool to see it finding an audience now, though!
Despite its performance in theaters, Tron: Ares is doing very well with viewers at home. It was the top digital rental and purchase on Fandango at Home for its first week, and many Disney+ subscribers are now watching it. This shows there’s still a strong audience for the Tron series.
Will Tron 4 Happen?
Although the central storyline of Tron: Ares concluded with the film, it set up possibilities for a follow-up. Jared Leto’s character, Ares, intends to locate Sam Flynn and Quorra from Legacy, who were only seen in old photos within Ares. Additionally, a scene after the credits showed Julian Dillinger being changed by a program disc originally belonging to his grandfather, Sark.
Last October, director Joachim Rønning hinted at potential future storylines for the show Ares. He specifically mentioned bringing back the character Sark, even in a brief appearance at the end, as a way to suggest possibilities for what’s to come. Rønning believes Julian Dillinger, who played Sark, could be a good foundation for continuing that character’s arc.
As a big sci-fi fan, I was really disappointed to hear that Tron: Ares didn’t do well in theaters. Word is Disney is now rethinking the whole Tron future, which probably means we won’t be seeing that Tron 4 setup from Ares anytime soon, if ever. It’s a shame, considering it was 15 years after Legacy, and Legacy was already almost 30 years after the original Tron. Still, you never know – maybe down the road, a new team at Disney will decide to bring that world back to life. It’s just going to be a long wait, I guess.
