The Missing Targaryen From ‘House of the Dragon’ Who Will Have a Major Impact on Season 3

The show House of the Dragon kept a secret Targaryen character hidden, and he will appear in season 3. Filming for season 3 recently finished after several months of work, getting the show ready for its 2026 release. The new season will introduce several characters, including Ormund Hightower, played by James Norton, and Ser Roderick Dustin, played by Tommy Flanagan, among others.

As a huge fan of these shows, I’ve noticed just how many Targaryens we’re meeting – from Game of Thrones all the way through House of the Dragon! And it looks like there are even more on the way as the story of the Dance of the Dragons keeps unfolding. HBO has given the green light for two more seasons, which is fantastic news because it means we’ll get to know even more characters. While details are still under wraps, I’m particularly excited to hear that Daeron Targaryen will be joining the cast. He’s another member of the royal family and sounds like he’ll be a key player in the battles to come.

Daeron Targaryen is the Third Son of Viserys I & Alicent Hightower

The Targaryen family in House of the Dragon can be tricky to follow, even if you’re familiar with the book Fire & Blood. Viserys and Alicent Hightower have four children: Aegon II, Aemond, Helaena, and Daeron Targaryen. While Daeron is supposed to be close in age to Aemond, the show changed his story. He was raised in Oldtown, the home of House Hightower, instead of with the rest of the family. This explains why, in season 2, Alicent asks Sir Gwayne Hightower for information about Daeron and what he’s like—she hasn’t seen him in years.

Gwayne believes Daeron is more compassionate than his brothers, likely because Daeron didn’t grow up in the harsh environment of the Red Keep. It will be interesting to see how his gentle nature fares as war approaches – the season finale showed the Hightower army, including Daeron and his young dragon Tessarion, heading into battle. Both Daeron and Tessarion are inexperienced, and the war will likely have a significant and damaging impact on them.

Season two of House of the Dragon featured shifts in power for both sides of the conflict, but Rhaenyra’s faction appeared to be gaining the upper hand. The addition of new dragonriders, many of whom were previously considered low-status, has dramatically increased Rhaenyra’s strength, giving her a significant advantage in the coming war for Westeros – despite Aemond still possessing the largest and most formidable dragon.

Though Daeron and Tessarion are young and haven’t had much experience, they’re still poised to be important figures. As seen with Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons in Game of Thrones, even smaller, less experienced dragons and their riders can significantly influence Westeros’s power struggles when the circumstances are right. Daeron is expected to play a key role in season 3 of House of the Dragon, and his nickname in Game of Thrones history, “Daeron the Daring,” hints at why.

‘House of the Dragon’s Daeron Casting Isn’t Clear

Filming for House of the Dragon season 3 is finished, but HBO and Warner Bros. haven’t announced who will play a certain character yet. While photos and videos circulating online suggest child actor Charlie Gordon may be playing Daeron Targaryen, we won’t know for sure until the studio makes an official confirmation.

The next season of House of the Dragon is currently scheduled to come out in Summer 2026, meaning we’ll probably start seeing trailers and official details soon. Because a young actor is playing Daeron, HBO might be waiting to share news about him to avoid negative online reactions. This is a smart approach, considering the strong and sometimes unpleasant responses to decisions made in the show’s second season.
