The MCU’s Last 6 Years Give Spider-Man 4 A Huge $1B Justification

For the past six years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has built a strong case for a fourth Spider-Man movie starring Tobey Maguire. Though a Spider-Man 4 seemed unlikely for over a decade, Tobey Maguire’s appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home has given fans renewed hope that it could finally happen.

After comments from both The Batman co-writer Mattson Tomlin – who expressed interest in working on Spider-Man 4 – and Tobey Maguire himself saying he’d be eager to reprise his role, a fourth Spider-Man movie seems increasingly likely. Plus, the financial success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes the project even more appealing.

Spider-Man’s Live-Action Movies Haven’t Made Under $1 Billion Since 2019

Only 11 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies have ever earned over $1 billion at the box office, making Spider-Man’s recent success even more remarkable. Both Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) surpassed that milestone. While not entirely unexpected – Far From Home saw Spider-Man stepping up after Iron Man’s passing, and No Way Home featured a huge crossover event – this achievement is significant for several reasons.

Spider-Man is consistently Marvel’s most successful and profitable characters. Recent box office numbers prove this, suggesting a strong public desire for more Spider-Man movies. This is supported by the huge success of the Spider-Verse films, with Miles Morales’ series already earning over $1 billion.

The huge popularity of the recent Spider-Man movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe means the filmmakers will likely be very cautious with Peter Parker’s story going forward. However, that success also creates a perfect opportunity for Tobey Maguire to return as Spider-Man in a fourth film, potentially continuing the story from his appearance in No Way Home.

Spider-Man 4 Would Be The Perfect Way To Expand The Hero’s $1B Record Outside Of The Mainline MCU

Figuring out the future of Spider-Man movies is tricky, and even with a good plan, a Spider-Man 4 isn’t automatically guaranteed to do well. However, the popularity of Spider-Man: No Way Home showed that fans are still very interested in the Spider-Man stories and characters played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, which suggests there’s definitely an audience for Spider-Man 4 now.

As a fan, I’m really excited about what No Way Home did for Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. We finally got a glimpse of what he’s been doing all these years, and there are so many interesting story possibilities there! But even more than that, the way they changed the endings for villains like Doc Ock and Green Goblin feels like they were specifically setting things up for future movies. It’s almost begging for those stories to be told!

It’s uncertain if a Spider-Man 4 movie will happen, especially so long after Spider-Man 3 and with the current Spider-Man films already being made. However, there’s still good reason to be optimistic, and the potential for huge box office success makes it a sensible idea.
