The MCU Officially Retcons The New Avengers Just 9 Months Before Doomsday

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is building towards a massive team-up event with Avengers: Doomsday, but the recent Daredevil: Born Again series appears to have undone some developments from The New Avengers. Throughout the current ‘Multiverse Saga’, Marvel has faced criticism for not sufficiently connecting its characters and storylines.

In 2025, several storylines converged in Thunderbolts, uniting characters from across the Multiverse Saga and beyond, all brought together by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Though Valentina initially intended to get rid of these hired guns to make way for her Sentry project, they ultimately ended up saving New York City from the Sentry’s dangerous other side.

After the Thunderbolts changed their name to The New Avengers, Yelena Belova (Black Widow) agreed to follow Valentina’s orders. However, with the arrival of a major, potentially catastrophic event just months away, Valentina no longer appears to be under anyone’s control.

The New Avengers Weren’t Able To Keep Valentina Allegra In Check

In the first episode of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, Charles—played by Matthew Lillard—is shown on a phone call with Valentina while at the Capitol. He seems to be working for both the government and the corrupt Mayor Fisk, and appears to be taking direction from Valentina.

It now appears Valentina is secretly making deals and working with people like Mayor Fisk, all while operating right under the noses of The New Avengers in New York City.

It’s still unclear what The New Avengers are doing and why they haven’t figured out Valentina’s plans. More concerningly, why are they letting Wilson Fisk cause so much trouble in New York, especially with the Anti-Vigilante Task Force operating as he does?

How Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Ties Into Thunderbolts*

Some believe The New Avengers are still active with the secret help of powerful figures like Valentina within the MCU. This suggests Valentina and Kingpin have a hidden understanding, conveniently ignoring each other’s activities for their own benefit.

It’s still unclear why the New Avengers would agree to participate in these kinds of missions. While they started as struggling mercenaries, their story in Thunderbolts showed them turning their lives around and becoming heroes. It feels like a step backward to have them reduced to simple tools in someone else’s plan after achieving that redemption.

While season two of Daredevil: Born Again is happening, it’s likely that The New Avengers and other top heroes are already dealing with the bigger problems that will come up in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Will We See Valentina Allegra In Daredevil: Born Again?

As a big Marvel fan, I’ve been thinking about how connected everything is, and it really seems like Valentina is going to play a bigger role down the line. With her ties to both Mr. Charles and Fisk, and the fact that she’s popped up in so many projects during the Multiverse Saga, I’m almost certain we’ll see her in season two of Daredevil: Born Again. It just makes sense with how they’ve been building things up!

It’s not certain if the storylines will truly converge in this series, and it’s likely that Mr. Charles will continue to act as a facilitator. Still, it’s exciting to see the Multiverse Saga’s stories start to connect, and Daredevil: Born Again, with its New York City setting, is in a perfect position to demonstrate this interconnectedness.
