The Matrix 5 Gets Encouraging Update From Director After 2 Years Of Silence

There is a new code brewing for The Matrix 5.

Despite the disappointing box office results of The Matrix Resurrections in 2021 – it earned only $160 million with a $190 million budget – Warner Bros. is moving forward with another film. Drew Goddard is set to write and direct this new installment.

Since the first announcement about The Matrix 5 in 2024, details have been scarce. However, director Goddard recently shared an encouraging update with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley while promoting Project Hail Mary. He confirmed the fifth movie is “still in the works,” adding that he’s currently writing the script and will share more news when it’s ready.

Following the 2024 announcement of The Matrix 5, Warner Bros. executive Jesse Ehrman stated the new story will build upon the existing world while staying true to the elements that made the original series popular. Details about filming and when the movie might be released are still unknown and will depend on whether the studio approves the script.

Although we don’t know when it will be released and development has been slow, the latest news confirms that a fifth Matrix movie is still in the works. Details about the story are still secret, and it’s currently unknown if Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will return as Neo and Trinity.

The next film will be the first in the Matrix series not directly created by the Wachowski sisters, who originally launched the franchise. Though Lana Wachowski isn’t directing, she will still be involved as an executive producer, having directed the previous film on her own.

The last couple of years have been really busy for Phil Lord and Chris Miller! I’m especially excited about their upcoming movie, Project Hail Mary, based on the awesome book by Andy Weir. They’ve also been working on a new show for ABC called High Potential – they actually created that one! And get this – they even helped James Gunn plan out the future of the DC Universe after he took charge at DC Studios. It sounds like they’ve got a lot on their plate, but everything they do is usually fantastic, so I’m looking forward to it all!

Even though reception to The Matrix Resurrections was a little better than Revolutions, it still only scored 63% on Rotten Tomatoes and was ultimately considered a box office disappointment because it didn’t earn back its production costs. It’s important to remember, though, that the film came out during the COVID-19 pandemic and was released both in theaters and on HBO Max at the same time, which likely affected its performance. This could create some pressure to make the next script even better.

Prior to the fourth film, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions earned $741 million and $427 million, respectively, following the original The Matrix‘s $467 million. While Revolutions, released in 2003, saw a significant drop in earnings, the filmmakers originally planned a trilogy. For almost twenty years, Warner Bros. pushed for another movie, and Lana Wachowski ultimately returned to direct it alone. However, filming was complicated by interruptions caused by the pandemic.

I’m so excited! Even though it wasn’t officially announced for a while, Keanu Reeves was on board for another Matrix movie. He said he’d definitely come back as Neo – he’s played him in every film so far – as long as Lana Wachowski, the producer, asked him to. It’s great to know he’s so dedicated to the franchise!

Laurence Fishburne, who originally played Morpheus, wasn’t immediately on board with the new film. He played Neo’s mentor in the original trilogy, but in Resurrections, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II took on the role of a digital version of Morpheus – an AI program based on the character.

During an April 2025 appearance on The View, Laurence Fishburne was questioned about potentially reprising his role in a fifth Matrix film. He didn’t commit to returning, stating it would depend on several factors, including the people involved and the quality of the script. He also made it clear he’d need to be offered the part. Fishburne had previously offered to appear in the 2021 film, but said the producers didn’t react positively to his offer.

Although work on The Matrix 5 is continuing, the recent Warner Bros. and Paramount merger creates uncertainty about the film’s future. It could be some time before we know for sure what happens next with the movie, including which actors will be involved.
