Taylor Sheridan’s TV shows are known for their complex and compelling characters – from a multi-generational rancher who became governor, to a tough oil executive, a brave CIA leader, a calm mobster, and a pioneering lawman. With the new Yellowstone spin-off, Dutton Ranch, Sheridan is expected to create even more richly developed characters as the story delves deeper into the dynamic between Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser).
Following the release of two new Taylor Sheridan shows in 2026, comes Dutton Ranch. First, the Yellowstone spin-off Marshals debuted on CBS in March, and then The Madison arrived on Paramount+. The Madison addresses past criticism of Sheridan’s female characters, featuring Stacy Clyburn (Michelle Pfeiffer), a mother finding healing in Montana. Now, the question is: how will Stacy and the other characters in The Madison compare to the memorable leads in Sheridan’s other shows?
James Dutton (‘1883’)

1883, the first of several Yellowstone origin stories, takes place after the Civil War and focuses on the Dutton family’s ancestors. The series follows James Dutton (played by Tim McGraw), the great-grandfather of John Dutton (Kevin Costner), as he leads his family on a difficult journey west from Tennessee to Texas. He’s joined by the experienced guide Shae Brennan (Sam Elliott). James, a former Confederate Army captain who was a prisoner of war, makes significant sacrifices to build a better life for his family.
James Dutton, while part of the Yellowstone family history and connected to the main series, doesn’t quite feel like the central figure of his own story – he often seems to play a supporting role to Shea Brennan. Combined with Tim McGraw’s somewhat uneven performance over the show’s ten episodes, James ends up being one of the least compelling main characters Taylor Sheridan has created. Sam Elliott consistently delivers a stronger performance, often overshadowing McGraw and making James feel secondary to the overall narrative.
Jacob & Cara Dutton (‘1923’)

I’m really drawn into this story set in the 1920s and 30s, during a time when America went from booming to facing the Great Depression. It follows Jacob and Cara Dutton, and I’m invested in seeing how they fight to hold onto their family’s land and way of life. It’s tough times – Prohibition, the Dust Bowl, and just a lot of hardship for everyone. They’re also raising their adopted sons, John and Spencer, and doing everything they can to protect them and survive the economic downturn. It’s a powerful story about family and resilience.
Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren have great chemistry and deliver strong, understated performances, but even their star power can’t fully sustain the series 1923. The characters of Jacob and Cara feel a bit underdeveloped, shifting the focus to Spencer’s big-game hunting adventures in Africa after World War I, and his wife, Alexandra Dutton, as she adapts to life in Montana. Rather than being the main heroes, Jacob and Cara function more as important supporting players within a talented cast, and don’t receive the same attention as Kayce Dutton.
Kayce Dutton (‘Marshals’)
Luke Grimes, known for his role as Kayce Dutton in five seasons of Yellowstone, now stars in the new spin-off Marshals. The series follows Kayce after his family begins to dismantle their ranch and sell land. He then becomes a U.S. Marshal in Montana, working to protect the area from domestic threats. While Marshals isn’t the strongest of the Yellowstone spin-offs so far, it allows Kayce’s character to grow and evolve in ways viewers didn’t see in the original series, establishing him as a classic action hero.
The premiere of Marshals shocked viewers with the unexpected death of Kayce’s wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), after much anticipation. This tragic event deepened the audience’s connection with Kayce and their desire for his well-being, especially as he now faces raising their son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), alone. The show also saw Kayce reconnect with a former Navy SEAL friend (Logan Marshall-Green) and become involved in dangerous confrontations, demonstrating that the actor playing Grimes could successfully lead his own series after being a supporting character for five seasons.
Joe McNamara (‘Lioness’)

Lioness, a thriller from Sheridan, centers around a top-secret CIA team of female operatives working undercover to eliminate terrorists in the Middle East. Zoe Saldaña, an Academy Award winner, powerfully portrays Joe McNamara, the program’s leader, who hopes to find both personal healing and professional success after a terrible event. As both a leader and a subordinate, Joe consistently demonstrates strength, courage, and determination.
Despite leaning heavily on familiar action-movie tropes and featuring somewhat underdeveloped female characters, Zoe Saldana delivers a powerful and captivating performance. She convincingly portrays Joe as both a strong, determined operative within the Lioness program and a vulnerable wife and mother to her husband, Neal (Dave Annable), and daughter, Kate (Hannah Love Lanier).
Mike McLusky (‘Mayor of Kinstown’)
Sheridan and Jeremy Renner, who previously worked together on Wind River, team up again in Mayor of Kingstown. This popular crime drama, currently available on Paramount+, has already aired four seasons with more planned. Renner delivers a powerful and believable performance as Mike McLusky, an ex-convict from a family that runs the private prison business in Kingstown, Michigan.
After his brother’s death, Mike unexpectedly steps into the role of a powerful figure in his town, working to solve its problems and fight corruption. Over the course of 40 episodes, we see a huge transformation in Mike, and Jeremy Renner delivers a remarkably convincing performance. The scenes between Mike and his demanding mother, Miriam (played by Diane Wiest), are particularly strong, revealing the deep-rooted family conflict that’s central to the town’s corrupt system.
Stacy Clyburn (‘The Madison’)

Sheridan’s The Madison offers a welcome departure from his usual work, delivering a moving and understated neo-western drama. The story centers on a family grieving a loss who move from New York City to Montana, hoping the beauty of nature will help them heal. Michelle Pfeiffer, in what is arguably her strongest television role yet, proves that Sheridan is capable of creating complex and believable female characters.
Sheridan’s series features Stacy Clyburn, played by Pfeiffer, a wife and mother struggling to rebuild her life after a terrible event dramatically changes her family. Stacy is the most complex and well-developed female character Sheridan has written so far. Haunted by the guilt of moving a family member away from their cherished Montana ranch, Stacy begins to shed her focus on possessions and discovers inner strength as she finds healing in the beauty of the Montana landscape.
Dwight Manfredi (‘Tulsa King’)

Sylvester Stallone, a three-time Oscar nominee, plays Dwight Manfredi, a tough and ruthless mobster known as “The General.” After spending 25 years in prison, Dwight is sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he starts a new criminal operation and clashes with rival gangs.
Though the series doesn’t revolutionize the gangster genre, Sylvester Stallone’s captivating performance is the biggest draw of Tulsa King. The story’s ‘outsider in a new place’ theme brings a lightness not often seen in Taylor Sheridan’s other shows, giving Stallone a chance to showcase his acting skills with a performance that’s both funny and intimidating. Throughout the three seasons, the complex relationship between the main character, Manfredi, and the ATF agent trying to put him away highlights his vulnerable side while also emphasizing his determination to survive.
Tommy Norris (‘Landman’)
Billy Bob Thornton, an Academy Award winner, seems perfectly cast as Tommy Norris in Landman. Norris is a constantly quotable, tough oilman who has worked his way up to Vice President at M-Tex Oil. He expertly navigates the challenges of being both a relatable, working-class guy and a quick-tempered executive, all while trying to keep his family happy as his job demands more of him.
Taylor Sheridan’s writing gives the character Tommy an incredible amount of memorable dialogue. Billy Bob Thornton delivers a remarkably natural performance as the practical, and often foul-mouthed, oil executive, drawing heavily on his own personality – he says 90% of the character comes from within himself. This makes the performance feel completely genuine, and it’s likely a key reason why Landman became Sheridan’s most-watched TV series to date, breaking viewership records.
John Dutton (‘Yellowstone’)

Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton III, is a strong contender as the one who truly kickstarted Taylor Sheridan’s success in television with Paramount+. Over five seasons of the hit neo-western drama Yellowstone, this fifth-generation rancher faced constant challenges and changes. From grieving the loss of his wife to serving as Montana’s Livestock Commissioner and even becoming governor, John Dutton’s journey is remarkably complex and covers a lot of ground.
Adding to the challenges, John’s children are ruthless and constantly work against his vision for the ranch. As the series progresses, John transforms from a strong, proud leader into a heartbreaking victim of his children’s selfishness. The story has a classic, Shakespearean feel – watching John’s successes turn into betrayal is powerfully tragic, and Kevin Costner delivers a truly standout performance.
Bass Reeves (‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’)

Taylor Sheridan’s new show, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, tells the incredible true story of Bass Reeves, a national hero and the first Black Deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River. The show, unique for featuring an actual historical figure, stars acclaimed actor David Oyelowo (known for Selma) in a powerful performance as Reeves, who served during and after the Civil War.
While working as a federal marshal in Arkansas’ Indian Territory, Bass Reeves supposedly arrested over 3,000 dangerous criminals without ever being seriously hurt. Though the show about his life is a deliberate, methodical crime drama – a departure from Taylor Sheridan’s usual fast-paced westerns – even Sheridan’s fictional characters don’t measure up to the incredible, real-life bravery Reeves demonstrated in the face of adversity.
