The Lion King’s Circle Of Life Translation Ignites A Feud

A popular online discussion about Disney’s The Lion King unexpectedly sparked a serious disagreement between two artists.

Comedian Learnmore Jonasi quickly became popular after his first appearance on America’s Got Talent. His funny stories about being a newcomer to the United States helped him reach the top 5 on season 19 of Simon Cowell’s show.

Jonasi, known for his clean public image, faced criticism after misinterpreting the opening lyrics to Disney’s The Lion King song, Circle of Life. In a video posted on One54 Africa’s Instagram, he jokingly claimed the first line actually meant, “Look, there’s a lion. Oh my God.” The video quickly spread online, and many Disney fans found humor in the idea that the song’s lyrics weren’t as profound as they believed.

Lebo M, the composer of Circle of Life, was upset by Jonasi’s joke. He publicly criticized Jonasi on social media, saying he should have verified the translation before making fun of it. Lebo M explained the actual translation is, “Oh hail the King. Bow in the presence of the royal family.” He strongly disapproved of Jonasi’s behavior, calling him arrogant, an idiot, and a disgrace, and dismissing him as an aspiring comedian.

Lebo said that Jonasi wouldn’t admit he made a mistake or apologize for the confusion. He felt Jonasi was being disrespectful to African culture and was prioritizing getting laughs over doing what was right.

Despite the composer raising some legitimate concerns, Jonasi promptly released a video to share his side of the story. He claimed the conversation unfolded much differently, stating that Lebo was actually the one who acted rudely and defensively. Jonasi explained he was open to learning from any mistakes and had even hoped to create a video with Lebo addressing the situation. However, Lebo’s dismissive behavior made Jonasi unwilling to apologize or continue the discussion.

This disagreement between the two artists comes down to conflicting accounts, with no clear evidence to prove who is being truthful. Since the issue happened privately, without any written record, it’s hard to know what really happened. Ultimately, this behavior between two adults over a song from The Lion King doesn’t reflect well on either of them.
