Filming for the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, a collaboration between Sony Pictures and Nintendo, began earlier this month in New Zealand. As expected, some early looks from the set have now appeared online. Over the weekend, videos shared on social media showed what seem to be the first glimpses of the movie, with actors dressed as popular characters, including stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (as Link) and Bo Bragason (as Zelda) filmed in costume. Nintendo has also released official images, which you can view below!
The first video shows actor Jack Ainsworth dressed as Link, complete with the iconic green tunic, belt, and quiver. His blonde hair is a noticeable change from his previous role in the comedy-drama Everything’s Going to Be Great. The second video features actress Mckenna Bragason as Princess Zelda, wearing a blue outfit inspired by Breath of the Wild, along with leather boots and fingerless gloves. Both costumes appear to be very faithful to the characters, which isn’t unexpected given that director Wes Ball has stated his dedication to staying true to the original Legend of Zelda games.
A second clip reveals the actress playing Zelda speaking with another character, identified by fans as Dichen Lachman, known for her role in the Apple TV+ series Severance. While her part in The Legend of Zelda hasn’t been confirmed, many believe she’s portraying Impa – Zelda’s steadfast protector who’s a recurring character in the video games, often depicted as a powerful fighter. The footage shows Lachman standing near a horse while interacting with Zelda, and she’s carrying a large, curved sword.
‘The Legend of Zelda’ Release Date: When Is the Film in Theaters?
The recent sneak peeks of the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie are likely the most fans will see for a good while. Production isn’t expected to finish until April 2026, and a full trailer won’t be released until after that. Originally planned for March 26, 2027, the movie’s release date was delayed to allow more time for editing and finishing touches. It’s now scheduled to hit theaters on May 7, 2027. Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto explained that the delay was “for production reasons,” and that the extra time will be used to ensure the movie is the best it can be.
The upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda movie is currently scheduled for release in the same month and year as new films starring Cynthia Erivo and a Star Wars movie directed by Shawn Levy, meaning it will face strong competition in theaters. However, movies based on video games have become increasingly popular and successful, with films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Sonic the Hedgehog series proving to be both critically and commercially successful. As two of Nintendo’s most iconic characters, Zelda and Link should draw a large audience and help the film perform well when it’s released.
