Earlier this month, fans of the original Avatar were upset to learn that Paramount reportedly won’t be releasing The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender in movie theaters. Instead, the new film will be available to stream directly on Paramount+.
The announcement quickly upset many fans who were excited about seeing an older Aang in a movie. In response, they started a petition on Change.org asking the studio to release the film in theaters as originally planned.
The online campaign protesting the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender—often referred to as The Legend of Aang—quickly became popular, gathering over eighteen thousand signatures in just a short time. The situation became even more heated when a comment appeared on the petition, supposedly from the film’s director, Steve Ahn. The message appeared to blame everyone involved and made the controversy even worse.
I worked on this film, starting as a team leader and ultimately becoming the director. I was very frustrated with decisions made by studio executives. There were many unfair and frustrating things they did during production that I plan to discuss later, but right now, I want to see it released back in theaters!
The comment everyone was talking about didn’t actually come from the director; it was posted by a troll online. Ahn quickly explained on social media that someone was pretending to be him and that he didn’t write the message. He appreciated the passion of those who signed the petition, but he was concerned that the post put real people in danger.
He worried the situation could easily lead to the spread of misinformation and unfairly stress the creative team. Ahn said he felt he had to publicly correct the false claims made by the impersonator, especially since they hinted at future, potentially misleading, information. He wanted to address the issue before it got worse.
As of today, the movie The Last Airbender, based on Avatar: The Legend of Aang, is scheduled to come out in October 2026. Eric Nam will play Aang, with Steven Yeun as Zuko, Dionne Quan as Toph Beifong, Jessica Matten as Katara, and Román Zaragoza as Sokka. Paramount has announced that Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Dee Bradley Baker, Peta Sergeant, Freida Pinto, and Ke Huy Quan will also be featured in supporting roles.
