Bella Ramsey, the actress who plays Ellie in HBO’s The Last of Us, recently gave fans an update on the show’s third season. The popular series, based on the acclaimed video game, was quickly renewed for a third season – just days before season 2 finished airing in late May.
Bella Ramsey recently shared that they’ve received the scripts for season 3 of The Last of Us. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards—where they were nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series—Ramsey didn’t say whether they’d had a chance to read them yet, and kept details about the new season under wraps.
“Yes, and I’ve just seen them. I’m really bad at reading things. Takes me a long time.”
Bella Ramsey talked about how the upcoming third season of The Last of Us will be impacted by the fact that Neil Druckmann, a co-creator and showrunner who also wrote and directed the original video game, won’t be as involved.
He really set us up for success, and his influence will always be felt. He essentially built everything from the ground up, so even though he’s stepped away, his impact remains. I’m confident things will be okay.
Okay, so things are shifting behind the scenes for The Last of Us season 3. We’ve lost some key creative voices – Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross, who were instrumental in both the Last of Us Part II game and the first season of the HBO show, are moving on. Plus, Danny Ramirez, who played Manny, won’t be back due to other commitments, and they haven’t found someone to fill his role yet. It’s a bit of a shake-up, and I’m curious to see how these changes will impact the story.
I was really sad to hear that Druckmann is leaving, but it’s good to know Craig Mazin will be leading the show from now on. I’m already so excited for season 3! From what I’ve heard, filming is planned to start in March 2026, and we can expect it sometime in 2027. Mazin is even planning to direct the first episode, and hopefully a second one too! He’s said it’s going to be a much bigger season than anything we’ve seen before, and I can barely contain my anticipation!
Now that season 2 of The Last of Us has finished, season 3 will cover the rest of the story from the second half of The Last of Us Part II video game. The season will mainly focus on Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever) and the other members of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), but Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced) will also be in the show to some extent.
