Vampire movies have been popular for decades, and several made between 1975 and 2025 stand out as particularly good. The fascination with vampires and other supernatural creatures goes back over a century, starting with some of the earliest monster movies in the 1920s and 30s featuring creatures like Dracula. As filmmaking has evolved, vampires have changed too, moving from scary monsters to more complex and even funny characters.
Fall is a great time to cozy up with a classic vampire film, but you can enjoy them any time of year! Whether you’re looking for a scare or a good laugh, there are tons of options, including some standout vampire movies from the last 50 years that are as timeless as the vampires themselves.
The Lost Boys (1987) Is a Cult Classic
Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys follows brothers Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim) as they move to Santa Carla, California, with their mother, Lucy (Dianne Wiest). Once there, Michael begins to turn into a vampire, but there’s a way to reverse the change: they must kill the leader of the vampires in town. Michael, Sam, and a pair of self-proclaimed vampire hunters, the Frog Brothers—Edgar (Corey Feldman) and Alan (Jamison Newlander)—team up to find and destroy the head vampire.
The Lost Boys is more than just a fun vampire movie – it’s a beloved film from the 1980s that has become a classic. It skillfully blends drama, horror, and comedy, and features a cast of memorable characters, particularly the vampires themselves. With excellent direction and a great atmosphere, it’s a movie you can watch again and again, and it’s unique for its focus on the importance of family within the vampire story.
Nosferatu (2024) Successfully Remakes a Horror Classic
Robert Eggers directs the new film Nosferatu, which is a reimagining of the classic 1922 silent movie Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. Both films are based on Bram Stoker’s famous gothic horror novel, Dracula (1897). Nosferatu stars Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, who develops a mysterious connection with Count Orlok (played by Bill Skarsgård) when they are children. When Ellen’s husband, Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult), goes to meet the count, Orlok quickly becomes fixated on Ellen. As Orlok begins to terrorize Ellen and those around her, Thomas desperately searches for a way to defeat him.
Nosferatu is a fantastic vampire film because it all just works so well. Even though the story is well-known, it maintains a consistently creepy and surprising atmosphere. The actors deliver excellent performances, with Depp as Ellen standing out in particular. Everything, from the setting to the music, feels perfectly balanced and never overdone.
Fright Night (2011) Delivers a Mix of Drama & Humor
Craig Gillespie’s 2011 film, Fright Night, is a reimagining of the 1985 movie directed by Tom Holland. The story follows Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin), a high school student in Las Vegas, who becomes suspicious of his new neighbor, Jerry (Colin Farrell). Charley’s concerns grow, particularly after his friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) disappears, leading him to believe something sinister is happening.
While the original Fright Night is enjoyable, the remake directed by Gillespie is definitely worth seeing. Anton Yelchin and Colin Farrell have great chemistry and easily draw you in, and the supporting cast is equally strong. The film strikes a good balance between scares and laughs, which perfectly complements its interesting story. The remake successfully updates the classic for modern audiences without losing the spirit of the 1980s original.
Interview with the Vampire (1994) Has an Excellent Cast
The movie Interview with the Vampire is based on Anne Rice’s 1976 novel. Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt play the vampires Lestat de Lioncourt and Louis de Pointe du Lac. Their centuries-long story is revealed through interviews with journalist Daniel Malloy (Christian Slater). Kirsten Dunst appears as Claudia, a young girl turned into a vampire by Lestat and Louis.
As much as I’m enjoying the new AMC series, the original Interview with the Vampire still holds up incredibly well, even after all these years – over 30, can you believe it? The whole cast is fantastic, but Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt really carry the story. For its time, the movie’s dark, gothic atmosphere and special effects were groundbreaking, and the story itself is just completely captivating. It’s a true classic for a reason!
Twilight (2008) Remains a Cultural Phenomenon
Directed by Catherine Hardwicke, Twilight is based on Stephenie Meyer’s 2005 novel of the same name. Meyer’s Twilight series includes four books, which were made into five movies between 2008 and 2012. The film Twilight centers on Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), a teenage girl who moves to Forks, Washington, and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a vampire who appears to be a 17-year-old high school student but is actually over a century old. As their relationship develops, Bella is targeted by other vampires.
While Twilight has some awkward scenes and a very dramatic portrayal of vampires, it’s undeniably had a big impact on both film and popular culture. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson do a good job of portraying Bella and Edward as attractive but also a little clumsy, and the connection between them is clear. The rest of the vampire family and their enemies are also compelling characters, and the movie’s overall look and use of color are particularly striking and memorable.
Sinners (2025) Tests Horror & Supernatural Boundaries
Okay, so I just watched this movie directed by Ryan Coogler, and it’s about these twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, played by the same actor. They’ve spent years working for the Chicago mob, and they come back to Mississippi hoping to settle down and open a little blues club. But things get complicated fast. This seriously creepy guy named Remmick shows up, and he’s turning people into vampires – and not the sparkly kind, either! I was really hooked watching Smoke and his cousin Sammie try to stop Remmick before the whole Delta turns undead. It’s a wild ride!
The newest film on this list, Sinners, is captivating and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. Jordan is outstanding playing two different roles, and Hailee Steinfeld gives a strong performance as Mary, the ex-girlfriend of one of the characters. The movie blends several genres – horror, the supernatural, action, and elements of Black history – into one compelling story. With its striking visuals and impressive special effects, it’s a technically and artistically impressive film.
What We Do in the Shadows (2014) Is Hilariously Absurd
Before becoming a popular FX TV show, What We Do in the Shadows started as a movie. Created by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, the film centers around four ancient vampires – Viago, Vladislav, Deacon, and Petyr – living in Wellington, New Zealand. They try to survive by feeding on people, aided by their familiars, but find it difficult to adjust to the modern world after centuries of being vampires.
What We Do in the Shadows is a really funny vampire movie because it cleverly subverts typical vampire tropes. The film’s humor comes from its relatable, yet absurd, portrayal of vampires and their everyday problems, presented in a mockumentary style with direct address to the camera. Beyond the humor, it boasts a strong script, memorable characters, and a perfectly suited modern setting.
John Carpenter’s Vampires (1998) Is Wildly Entertaining
John Carpenter’s Vampires centers around Jack Crow, a vampire hunter trained by the Catholic Church, and his partner Tony Montoya. Their mission is to prevent Jan Valek, a particularly strong vampire, from obtaining an ancient, powerful cross. They enlist the help of Katrina, a prostitute with a unique ability to connect with Valek mentally.
While not for everyone, John Carpenter’s Vampires is a fun watch, especially if you enjoy over-the-top action. The film’s connection between the vampire hunter and the Catholic Church is a bit unusual, but it works within the story. It also has a distinct Western vibe, and James Woods gives a strong performance.
Near Dark (1987) Showcases How to Blend Genres
Kathryn Bigelow’s film, Near Dark, tells the story of Caleb Colton, an Oklahoma man who becomes a vampire after an encounter with Mae. Despite the rest of her vampire group wanting to eliminate him, Mae convinces them to teach Caleb how to survive by hunting and feeding. As Caleb tries to fit in, he eventually decides to go back to his family, which causes problems for everyone.
When it first came out, Near Dark didn’t do very well, but over time it’s gained a following and is now considered a classic. The film features vampires, but it’s a unique blend of horror, action, Western, and even comedy. The vampires in the movie, like Bill Paxton’s character Severen, aren’t the typical invincible creatures, which makes them feel more believable. The action is exciting, and the film has a strong, atmospheric feel.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) Is the Best Modern Adaptation
Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula is a film adaptation of the classic novel. It features Gary Oldman as Dracula, Winona Ryder as Mina Murray, Anthony Hopkins as Abraham Van Helsing, and Keanu Reeves as Jonathan Harker. The story centers around Dracula’s infatuation with Mina, who is engaged to Jonathan. When Mina chooses Jonathan, Dracula begins to torment her and those around her, leading to a desperate attempt by Van Helsing to defeat him.
Over the last half-century of vampire films, Bram Stoker’s Dracula stands out as the best. While Gary Oldman’s performance and accent are a bit uneven, the acting from Winona Ryder and Anthony Hopkins is superb. The story is captivating, it stays truer to the original novel than most other versions, and the film’s visuals and special effects are truly impressive.
