The Greatest Slasher Franchise of All Time Scream Finds New Streaming Home on Paramount+

Slasher movies were hugely popular in the 1980s and 1990s, and several franchises are still going strong today. One of the most well-known slasher films is getting a new streaming platform just before its latest installment is released.

Starting January 1st, all six Scream movies became available on Paramount+. This timing is perfect, as Scream 7 is set to release in theaters on February 27th.

The first four Scream movies were all directed by Wes Craven, a highly acclaimed director. Kevin Williamson wrote the screenplays for the first, second, and fourth films, while Ehren Kruger wrote the script for Scream 3, released in 2000.

As a huge horror fan, I always find it fascinating to talk about Scream 3 from 2000. It’s kind of infamous, actually – it’s the only movie where both critics and general audiences gave it negative ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, with scores of 45% and 38% respectively. The story wraps up the original trilogy and it’s a really meta concept: Sydney finds herself in Hollywood, and a new Ghostface starts targeting the actors filming Stab 3 – which is, of course, the movie within the movie!

After a ten-year hiatus, the Scream series returned in 2011 with Scream 4. Then, in 2022, the franchise was revitalized with a new Scream movie that introduced a new protagonist while also bringing back familiar faces from previous films.

The Scream Franchise Keeps Slashing

Originally, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega were set to star in Scream 7. But after Barrera was fired and Ortega left the project, the filmmakers had to rewrite the story. Skeet Ulrich, who played Ghostface in previous films, revealed that a long-held fan theory – that Sam would become Ghostface – was correct. He also confirmed he won’t be appearing in the new movie.

I’ve definitely talked about this before. It wasn’t meant to happen that way. When we discussed continuing the series with a fifth film, the plan was for Billy Loomis to gradually influence his daughter to become a killer over three movies. Unfortunately, things changed, and that didn’t happen. As for a seventh film, I have no information about it.

Kevin Williamson, the original writer of the series, will direct the new film. He co-wrote the script with Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt, who also penned the last two movies. Courteney Cox, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding will return as their previous characters. Interestingly, David Arquette and Scott Foley will also appear, even though their characters were killed off in earlier films.

Okay, so Scream 7 is shaping up to have a seriously packed cast! We’re getting some fresh faces like Isabel May, Anna Camp, and Mckenna Grace joining the fray, along with Joel McHale, Michelle Randolph, Jimmy Tatro, and a bunch more. The big news, though? This time around, Ghostface is setting their sights on Tatum, Sydney Prescott’s daughter. That’s right, the legacy continues, and it’s getting personal. I’m already intrigued!

Scream 7 debuts in theaters on Feb. 27.
