Over the years, many popular science fiction movie series have emerged, and a surprising number of them owe a debt to Frank Herbert’s novels, Dune. Finally, these groundbreaking books are getting the big-screen treatment they deserve, with the next installment coming out next year.
The next Dune movie will be based on Dune Messiah, bringing that story to the big screen. The filmmakers might also draw from the third book in the series. Unfortunately, this will be the last Dune film directed by this particular director, even though there are still more stories to tell within the Dune universe.
Lisan al-Gaib Returns Two Years After Dune: Part Two
Following the huge success of Dune: Part Two in 2024, a third Dune film was quickly discussed. Director Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune has been widely praised for being more faithful to the book than David Lynch’s earlier attempt, although it still takes some liberties with the original story. This was particularly noticeable in the ending of the second movie, which altered the fates of Paul Atreides and Chani.
The next Dune movie, Dune: Part Three, will primarily be based on the first book, but it looks like it will also draw from the third novel in the series. The actors who will play Leto II and Ghanima Atreides, the children of Paul and Chani, have already been chosen, even though they aren’t born until the second book, Dune Messiah, and don’t become important characters until Children of Dune.
Similar to how Dune: Part Two changed the ending of the first film and the roles of characters like Alia Atreides, Dune: Part Three will likely jump ahead in time and blend elements from the second and third books in the series. This could be a smart move, as many feel the story in Dune Messiah isn’t very action-packed.
The upcoming Dune movie appears to be blending elements from multiple books, much like the Sci-Fi Channel’s Children of Dune miniseries did. While it’s unclear exactly how the story will unfold, Alia – briefly portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy in Dune: Part Two – is expected to be a much more prominent character. Despite being almost a year away, the growing excitement suggests the Dune franchise will become a major force in science fiction cinema.
Superhero movies used to be the biggest thing in science fiction, but even they aren’t performing as well in theaters lately. Meanwhile, many fans are starting to criticize how Disney is managing the Star Wars franchise, as it’s been over five years since the last movie came out. It’s interesting to note that Star Wars borrowed heavily from Dune, perhaps more than any other major series.
The Star Trek movies have faced similar challenges, with several projects recently cancelled. Currently, the biggest competition for Dune at the box office comes from James Cameron’s Avatar films, which consistently perform incredibly well. Interestingly, Avatar also draws inspiration from the same sources as Dune, including the works of Frank Herbert. With many other science fiction franchises struggling, Dune has a real opportunity to become the leading sci-fi series on the big screen.
The Story of Dune Will Continue Beyond the Third Movie
Dune: Part Three will conclude director Denis Villeneuve’s planned trilogy, but the world of Dune extends much further than the first three books—Dune, Dune Messiah, and Children of Dune. Frank Herbert wrote three additional novels, and later, his son Brian Herbert, along with Kevin Anderson, continued the series. Though these later books aren’t as critically acclaimed as the originals, some of the better-regarded ones could potentially be adapted into future films or series.
Assuming the remaining three novels by Frank Herbert are adapted into films, their future is uncertain now that Denis Villeneuve won’t be directing after the next installment. Considering how unusual and complex those sequels are, ending the series with a third film might be a good decision. Even if the movies don’t continue beyond that, this new adaptation will still tell many of the key stories.
In 2024, fans enjoyed both the movie Dune: Part Two and the new TV series Dune: Prophecy. Dune: Prophecy is a prequel, taking place long before the events of the films, and draws heavily from the novel Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. The show has already been renewed, and it’s likely to continue for several seasons.
Continuing the story beyond the planned movies feels like the most logical next step, particularly with potential for new shows and novels – even stories like the Butlerian Jihad. This would follow Denis Villeneuve’s completion of what’s shaping up to be one of the greatest science fiction trilogies in recent history. Fans will need to be patient, as the final chapter of Paul Atreides’ journey isn’t due until December 18, 2026, but the first two films suggest it will be well worth the wait.
