The new movie featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu is predicted to have a very low opening weekend at the box office. Despite strong positive reviews from audiences, it’s hoping the Memorial Day holiday will boost ticket sales.
Despite earning $33 million domestically on Friday from 4,300 theaters – the lowest opening day for any The Mandalorian and Grogu release – the film still led the box office. This is less than the $35.4 million Solo: A Star Wars Story made on its first day in 2018 (without adjusting for inflation). The upcoming Memorial Day weekend could significantly increase ticket sales, as families are expected to go to the movies.
The Mandalorian & Grogu Is Already Loved By Audiences
A key advantage for The Mandalorian and Grogu is strong positive buzz. Early reviews are promising, with 62% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes giving it a positive rating. Even more impressively, over 5,000 viewers have given the film an 89% audience score, suggesting it’s resonating well with those who’ve seen it.
According to early estimates from The Hollywood Reporter, The Mandalorian and Grogu is expected to earn between $70 million and $95 million domestically over its opening four days, with a likely figure around $82 million.
Disney estimates its latest film will earn between $92 and $96 million over the holiday weekend, with around $77 million coming from the traditional three-day period. While a solid start, this is lower than the $103 million earned by a previous film during its four-day domestic opening. That earlier film ultimately grossed $393 million worldwide, and it’s currently unclear whether The Mandalorian and Grogu will surpass that total in the coming weeks.
The latest Star Wars movie builds on the story from Disney+’s The Mandalorian series, which aired from 2019 to 2023. Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin, and the cast also includes Jeremy Allen White, Jonny Coyne, and Martin Scorsese.
One Massive Issue Could Hold The Mandalorian & Grogu Back
Although most people enjoyed the film, both viewers and critics agree it has a weak plot—and this could significantly lower its box office earnings. Many reviews praised the action and unexpected moments, but consistently pointed to the storyline as a major flaw.
Critics at Rotten Tomatoes generally found the show to be weak on plot, describing it as a minor story that relies on the appealing relationship between its two main characters. Audience reviews largely agreed, with many viewers enjoying Pedro Pascal and Grogu, but feeling the storyline didn’t quite fit with the rest of the franchise.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is now playing in theaters.
