Many consider The Expanse to be one of the greatest sci-fi TV shows ever made, but it truly deserves to be called perfect if Prime Video continues the story with a sequel. While now a Prime Video hit, The Expanse originally aired on SyFy before being rescued by the streamer after the first network cancelled it.
As a huge sci-fi fan, I was thrilled when Prime Video stepped in to save The Expanse. It meant we got a total of six seasons, and honestly, the good definitely outweighed any disappointment about it ending. The fact that fans rallied and got three extra seasons of what I consider one of the greatest sci-fi shows ever made is incredible. Still, a part of me always wished it could have continued even longer – there was just so much potential!
Prime Video Found A Fitting Ending To The Expanse But Not A Perfect One
While not flawless, the sixth and final season of The Expanse served as a satisfying conclusion to the series. It delivered an exciting and emotionally resonant wrap-up for its characters. However, the season was unusually short, consisting of only six episodes, and introduced a storyline involving Laconia that wasn’t explored further, as it didn’t align with the source material from the books.
Over its six seasons, The Expanse covered the storylines from most of the main books. However, the final three novels – Persepolis Rising, Tiamat’s Wrath, and Leviathan Falls – weren’t adapted for television. This makes sense, though, as the show ended at a logical point, before a significant 30-year time jump occurred in the books, concluding the central narrative of The Expanse.
Many fans consider the last three books of The Expanse – where Laconia, led by High Consul Winston Duarte, becomes the primary enemy – to be the strongest in the series. While season 6 of The Expanse provides a satisfying conclusion to the show, viewers who haven’t read these books are missing out on some truly compelling political drama, unexpected turns, and intense storytelling.
The Expanse Fans Can Already Enjoy A TV Show Sequel In Another Form
As of now, it doesn’t look like Prime Video plans to create another series to adapt the last three books of The Expanse. But for fans who’ve finished the show and don’t want to read the novels, there’s a comic book series that continues the story perfectly.
The Expanse: Dragon Tooth is a 12-part comic book series that bridges the gap between the novels Babylon’s Ashes and Persepolis Rising. Running from April 2023 to May 2024, the series fills in the story during the 30-year time jump, offering fans a continuation of the sci-fi saga. It resolves unanswered questions from the series finale and sets the stage for future storylines from the books, making it essential reading for anyone who loves The Expanse.
