The Eternaut: Top-Rated Post-Apocalyptic Show Outshines The Last Of Us

Forget everything you loved about The Last of Us – there’s a brand new, fantastic post-apocalyptic series now streaming on Netflix. These kinds of shows have become really popular lately, and while it’s interesting to think about why that is, I won’t get into that right now.

While not the first, The Last of Us has quickly become one of the most important post-apocalyptic TV shows. Airing on HBO Max, it’s a high-quality adaptation of a popular video game that still appeals to a wide audience, and its story is more than just about the end of the world.

Many current post-apocalyptic TV shows are measured against this one. The Eternaut, a 2025 Netflix series, has become a benchmark in the genre, earning a renewal for a second season and a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Eternaut Depicts The Foreboding Nature Of An Apocalypse Better Than Other Dystopian Shows

The Eternaut is an Argentinian series, originally in Spanish, that starts with a strange snowfall covering the entire world. Seen from Buenos Aires, it quickly becomes clear that this snow is deadly to anyone who touches it. The story follows a group of people trying to survive and figure out what’s going on.

What makes The Eternaut stand out, even compared to many well-known dystopian thrillers, is its ability to build a strong sense of dread. Many post-apocalyptic shows quickly move past the initial disaster, focusing on life afterward. Others that do show the crisis itself tend to emphasize the immediate dangers, rather than the feeling of something terrible coming.

The comic The Eternaut explores the sheer terror of a world-ending event, a feeling often overlooked in disaster stories. It highlights how frightening it would be to face complete, sudden destruction – even if the cause is something we understand, like a disease. The story centers on the feeling of facing the unknown.

This series is deeply unsettling rather than outright frightening, creating a chilling atmosphere as the mystery of the snowfall unfolds. The Eternaut portrays a world where people struggle to accept a changing reality, resulting in a truly original and thought-provoking story.

2025 Was A Great Year For Post-Apocalyptic TV Shows

2025 wasn’t just about The Eternaut and season 2 of The Last of Us. There were tons of excellent post-apocalyptic TV shows available. Streaming services were overflowing with dystopian content, and much of it was really good.

Several highly anticipated TV shows, including new seasons of Paradise, Pluribus, Andor, Severance, and Fallout, all set in post-apocalyptic or dystopian worlds, premiered in 2025. This genre is currently very popular, and The Eternaut arrives as another exciting addition.

As a huge fan, I was really disappointed to hear that season 2 of The Eternaut might not arrive until 2028 – it leaves us hanging with so many unanswered questions from that season one finale (according to WON). Even with just one season under its belt, though, The Eternaut is a seriously impressive post-apocalyptic show, and honestly, it’s right up there with the best of them.
