Please be aware that this article contains slight spoilers for the movie The Drama. While Robert Pattinson and Zendaya’s characters are at the heart of the film’s central conflict, Mamoudou Athie and Alana Haim play vital roles. Their characters, a married couple, provide a contrast to Charlie and Emma, and are just as surprised to learn Emma’s secret as he is.
In The Drama, the two actors create some of the most interesting conflicts and comedic moments, particularly when compared to the characters of Emma and Charlie. In a recent ScreenRant interview, Athie and Haim talked about their first impressions of the script, how they developed their chemistry, and the experience of filming the crucial dinner scene.
Mamoudou Athie & Alana Haim Reflect On Their First Reaction To The Drama Script
I just finished watching The Drama, and wow, it really gets to you! It’s a tough watch because it centers around a big secret from Emma’s past and how it affects everyone around her. You really feel for Charlie, her fiancé, as he deals with the consequences. But honestly, I was surprised by how much the film focused on Emma and Charlie’s best friends, Mike and Rachel. Mike is completely thrown and doesn’t know what to do, while Rachel has this incredible, explosive reaction – the actress, Haim, really brought that anger to life, it was fantastic!
Reading the script was captivating – I was completely hooked and eager to find out what would happen next. It’s a rare experience; I’ve only read a few scripts that grabbed me like this one. Actually, counting my work on One Battle After Another, this is my fourth time.
This script was incredibly tense. When I consider a movie role, I always trust my instincts, and something about Rachel’s character immediately felt like a challenge – a part that would really push me outside of my comfort zone.
Rachel, played by Haim, reacts strongly to the news, while Mike, played by Athie, is more confused and unsure how to react. This makes him an unexpected source of deadpan humor in certain scenes, but what truly drew Athie to the role was exploring the deeper consequences of this revelation.
I was immediately impressed when I read the script, but also a little intimidated. I then checked out Kristoffer Borgli’s previous films, which are excellent. Everything just clicked, and after a good discussion, I knew this was a project I wanted to be a part of.
Athie & Haim On Finding The Dynamic For Mike And Rachel
Because Athie and Haim’s connection mirrored that of Pattinson and Zendaya, the actors needed to handle their characters’ relationship with care.
Mamoudou Athie believes that strong on-screen chemistry really comes down to attentive listening. He dismisses the idea that it’s some kind of mystical occurrence, saying it’s simply about genuinely caring about and being interested in what your scene partner is doing. He and Kristoffer discussed their characters’ relationship at the beginning of the project, and then, working with a talented actor like Alana and having a well-written script made the rest feel natural.
Honestly, nothing Mike did really surprised me. We’d already talked during rehearsals about how he wouldn’t fully support his friend, and how he struggled to be assertive in his own relationship. I was a little surprised by that, though, because I would never let that happen to me [Laughter].
Haim quickly felt a strong connection with Athie when they started working together, and that helped them collaborate really well throughout the entire project.
We all worked really well together – the four of us truly felt like a team. We were discussing a dinner scene, and it was amazing how everyone checked their egos at the door. We were completely focused on making the scene the best it could be, because it’s such an important moment in the film.
That scene is essential to the movie’s meaning; without it, the story just wouldn’t work. It was wonderful working with such a selfless and collaborative cast and crew. Everyone was focused on making the best possible film, and we succeeded in creating something truly special. I couldn’t have hoped for a better team to bring this movie to life.
By the end of filming, it truly felt like we weren’t even aware of the cameras anymore. It was like a natural conversation between four friends, having a really deep discussion. That’s still what surprises me the most. When you’re completely focused on a movie scene, everything else fades away. When all four of us were really connected, it created a special, almost magical feeling – you could feel it physically. It really allowed us to be open and vulnerable in that scene, and it wouldn’t have worked if even one person hadn’t been willing to do that.
