‘The Drama’ Review: Robert Pattinson & Zendaya Deliver a Fantastically Twisted Romcom

You’re ready to get engaged and start a life together. But have you really gotten to know them? What if a hidden truth changed everything? The movie The Drama has a major surprise, so we won’t reveal any details! It starts in New York City, where museum curator Charlie sees Emma (Zendaya) reading at a coffee shop. He tries to impress her with a witty opening line, but it doesn’t go well. Emma is hard of hearing in one ear and didn’t catch what he said, but she’s willing to give the charming, slightly awkward British man another try.

Two years after they first met, Charlie and Emma are now living together and deeply in love. They’re getting married in just a week, and things are busy with friends and family arriving. But they’re not stressed at all – they’re perfect opposites who clearly belong together. There’s a joyful energy throughout, and they’re handling all the wedding preparations with ease.

During a casual dinner to discuss the wedding menu, the couple and their close friends – Mike and Rachel, who is also Emma’s maid of honor – play a game where everyone shares their most embarrassing secret. The fun and laughter continue until Emma reveals something shocking that leaves everyone speechless.

Kristoffer Borgli, the writer and director known for films like Sick of Myself and Dream Scenario, takes a surprising turn in this movie, shifting the story in a way that deeply impacts its themes. While still darkly humorous, the film delves into a troubling and unsettling exploration of a disturbing American trend. This leads to intense conflicts for all the characters and forces them – and the audience – to re-evaluate everything they thought they knew about each other. Borgli presents a brutally honest and realistic portrayal of a situation where words have lasting, damaging consequences, and it’s impossible to avoid questioning previously held beliefs.

The acting is fantastic, but the film’s intense atmosphere is primarily due to director Borgli’s clever editing. When the tension mounts, Borgli uses quick, jarring cuts, which creates a sense of discomfort and puts the characters on edge. He also utilizes extreme close-ups and strategic silences, then adds another powerful technique: fantasy sequences that blend into the present moment. These sequences show us how the characters truly feel about each other, revealing their uncertainty and fear. It’s a visually stunning and expertly crafted element that makes the film captivating.

The film excels at building complex and believable characters. Robert Pattinson delivers another strong performance, portraying Charlie as someone who overthinks everything, especially after learning a shocking truth about Emma. He’s consumed by doubt, constantly replaying their memories and questioning whether his feelings were based on a false understanding of who she really is. Despite his confusion and fear, Charlie still cares deeply for Emma and wants to be with her, but he’s struggling to reconcile his love with the unsettling revelations that have shaken their relationship to its core.

I’m really struck by how much Emma has grown, especially with her honest confession. The show delves into her difficult teenage years, and it’s fascinating to see how those experiences shaped her. Jordyn Curet does an amazing job showing us that younger Emma, and it really helps us understand who she is now. It makes you wonder, though – has she really moved past all that, or is that old pain still hidden inside? Zendaya is incredible as someone who wants to be open about her past, but she’s also terrified of being judged for it. Shouldn’t she be seen for who she is now? I really feel for her and her relationship with Charlie. She loves him so much and just wants him to be truthful with his feelings. It’s hard to imagine them having a real future if he can’t fully trust her, or if she senses he’s holding something back.

The film The Drama maintains a gripping pace right through to its satisfying conclusion. While the ending’s hint is repeated, this actually feels realistic – complex relationships rarely unfold in simple ways, and characters’ reactions to crises are shaped by their history. The film sets you up for an outcome that isn’t shocking, but feels earned and true to life. The main weakness is that the plot sometimes relies a little too much on rumors and chance occurrences. However, this is a small flaw in an otherwise captivating film that’s sure to spark debate due to its sensitive topic. Robert Pattinson and Zendaya both deliver excellent performances.
