The new Superman TV show is building on a part of the movie that hadn’t been explored much before. As the DC Universe develops, it’s starting to link its different shows and movies together. For example, the story in Peacemaker season 2 was affected by Superman, and characters from Creature Commandos, like Rick Flag Sr., appeared in it.
The Superman universe is growing with the new series, DC Crime. This true-crime documentary will star Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen and will include the villain Gorilla Grodd, who recently appeared in Creature Commandos. The series will be led by showrunners Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, known for American Vandal.
A show focusing on Jimmy Olsen might seem unexpected for this series, but he was a memorable character in the movie, and a spin-off is a great way to continue his story, especially after his previous portrayal was cut short. The series also offers a chance to explore the world of the Daily Planet more fully, since the team didn’t get much screen time in Superman.
DC Crime Can Showcase The Daily Planet Team More Than Superman
A key part of what makes Superman so engaging is The Daily Planet. Alongside David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Gisondo as Olsen, director James Gunn brought together a fantastic group of actors to play the newspaper staff, including Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard.
Fans were happy to hear that Clark Kent’s job at the Daily Planet would be shown in the 2025 movie, especially since it was largely missing from previous DC films. However, the movie didn’t deliver on that promise. While Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen had significant roles, the rest of the Daily Planet staff was underused, with very little screen time or dialogue.
Jimmy and Lois led the investigation into Luthor’s wrongdoings, with Jimmy being instrumental in getting information from Eve Teschmacher. It’s a shame this aspect wasn’t explored further, as the actors had great chemistry in their limited scenes together. The final showdown aboard Mr. Terrific’s ship hinted at how funny and dynamic the team could be, with each performer contributing a distinct style.
Bennett is a very funny actor, but the show doesn’t give him much chance to show it. Pierce was ideal as the strict, no-nonsense boss. This is a great group of characters for a workplace comedy, and DC Crime has the potential to really make them shine. While Olsen would be the lead, the other people at the Daily Planet should also get plenty of opportunities to stand out.
Clark Kent Could Also Get More Screen Time
Because the team at The Daily Planet wasn’t featured much, Clark Kent also didn’t get a lot to do. David Corenswet had some opportunities to show us his version of Clark through scenes with Lois and his parents, but the movie didn’t show him working as a journalist very often. The focus on Superman’s story meant there wasn’t much space to explore Clark’s job, though the upcoming series might fix that.
As seen in Peacemaker season 2 with the appearance of Lex Luthor, James Gunn is open to having major stars make cameo appearances in DC Universe TV shows. It naturally fits that Clark Kent (Superman) would have a small role in DC Crime because of his friendship with Jimmy Olsen and his job at the Daily Planet. Plus, if Gorilla Grodd is causing trouble, Superman would probably intervene to protect Metropolis.
Clark doesn’t need to be a major character, just present enough to show he’s working. This allows David Corenswet to really shine as Superman and explore the earlier years of his life, before the events of Man of Tomorrow in 2027. Showing Clark navigating both his heroic duties and everyday life is essential to understanding who Superman is.
The Daily Planet Team Doesn’t Need To Be Involved More In Man Of Tomorrow
As a huge Superman fan, I’ve always loved the tension between Superman and Lex Luthor. That moment where they just look at each other? It’s clear their conflict is far from over! And I’m really excited about what’s coming next – James Gunn shared some artwork online showing Superman leaning against Lex’s giant green mech suit, and it hints that ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is going to really explore that rivalry. It looks like we’re in for something big!
Based on recently revealed artwork, the next movie will likely show Lex Luthor and Superman working together, despite their differences, to defeat a strong new enemy. Director James Gunn hinted on X (formerly Twitter) that while Superman will have a major part in the film, it won’t be a direct continuation of the previous movie’s story. This means the film might not focus on Clark Kent’s personal life, such as his relationship with Lois Lane or his job at The Daily Planet.
If The Daily Planet isn’t prioritized, DC Crime could be the perfect way to continue developing the team within the DC Universe. A documentary-style show would also be a strong way to update their approach to journalism. Though Superman only briefly featured The Daily Planet, DC Crime has the potential to give this team the focus they deserve.
