Mike Flanagan compared his upcoming Prime Video series, an adaptation of The Dark Tower, to a massive undertaking, like an oil tanker. He also emphasized that the project is a high priority for him and will receive his complete focus.

Mike Flanagan confirmed to Empire Magazine that the project is actively in development, with many scripts already completed and taking top priority.

In 2017, a film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower was released. The movie featured Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Taylor, Claudia Kim, Fran Kranz, Abbey Lee, and Jackie Earle Haley. Despite the star-studded cast, the film, directed by Nikolaj Arcel, received negative reviews and currently has a 16% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Flanagan is eager to adapt The Dark Tower because he wants to create a faithful version of Stephen King’s books and address the shortcomings of previous film attempts.

“We can’t let that be the final word,” Flanagan said about the movie. “We really can’t.”

In 2022, Mike Flanagan revealed to Deadline that his production company, Intrepid Pictures, now owns the rights to adapt The Dark Tower. He described it as a dream project and envisions it as a five-season television series, potentially followed by two separate films.

Mike Flanagan shared his enthusiasm for the pilot script of The Dark Tower, calling it a career highlight. He described working on the project as surreal and expressed gratitude to Stephen King for entrusting them with such a beloved story. They are now looking for the right collaborators to bring it to life.

The journey to bring The Dark Tower to television was difficult. Glen Mazzara signed on to lead the series in September 2016, and in 2019, Jasper Pääkkönen and Sam Strike were cast as the main characters, Roland Deschain and The Man in Black. However, despite these steps, the show was never actually made.
