The CW’s 4-Season Historical Drama With 86% Is Heading to Free Streaming in August

You’ll soon be able to watch all four seasons of the CW’s historical drama Reign on Pluto TV without paying! This is part of a larger update to Pluto TV, which will include many other new television series.

A new historical drama series is coming to Pluto TV alongside other popular titles. Starting August 1st, you can watch all of these shows on Pluto TV completely free! This collection has been created especially for viewers aged 18 to 34, who are the platform’s fastest-growing group of users.

The television series Reign, developed by Laurie McCarthy and Stephanie SenGupta, aired for four seasons. Although the initial season received a varied response from reviewers, later seasons were widely praised.

What Is Reign About?

The historical drama Reign is set in the late 1500s and centers on the story of Mary, Queen of Scots. It depicts her journey to power, beginning with her time at the French court, and features Adelaide Kane (known from Once Upon a Time and Grey’s Anatomy) as Queen Mary Stuart.

The first season of Reign starts in 1557 with 15-year-old Queen Mary living in France. She’s sent to the castle to prepare for her arranged marriage to Crown Prince Francis, a match planned when they were both just six years old. While navigating courtly life and political intrigue, Mary also finds herself attracted to Francis’s illegitimate half-brother, Bash.

Season 2 begins after King Henry II’s death, with Francis and Mary becoming the new King and Queen of France and Scotland. They face challenges from rivals who want the French throne, and also navigate the conflicts arising from religious differences between Catholics and Protestants.

The third season opens with King Francis falling ill, and his death leaves Mary widowed. This leads to his brother, Charles, taking the throne, diminishing Mary’s influence. Simultaneously, Queen Elizabeth I attempts to undermine Mary’s position. Mary, in turn, navigates unwanted marriage offers while secretly having an affair with Lord Robert Dudley.

The fourth season begins in 1563 with Mary as Queen of Scotland, working to strengthen her position. She deals with rivals and builds alliances while Elizabeth secretly plans to take the Scottish throne. The story concludes in 1587.

Reign Had Divisive Reviews

The first season of Reign has a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 52 critic reviews. People magazine enjoyed the show, calling it “good, capering, costume-ball fun” despite the difficult life of Mary, Queen of Scots. However, The AV Club felt the show was disjointed, comparing it to watching multiple shows at once without a clear focus.

Viewers really enjoyed the first season, giving it an 83% rating, which was quite different from the critics’ score. Later seasons, two and three, both received perfect 100% scores from critics, but these were based on a very small number of reviews – just seven for season two and five for season three.

Reign will be available to stream on Pluto TV beginning Aug. 1.
