The most underrated sci-fi action epic in years is finally finding success on streaming.
Combining science fiction and war stories often works well, but Gareth Edwards’ 2023 film, despite its potential, wasn’t a hit in theaters. The movie reimagined the Vietnam War with a futuristic twist, pitting humans against intelligent robots and AI. Although it only made $104 million at the box office, the film has since gained a dedicated following through streaming services. Now available on another platform, it’s proving popular with viewers all over again.
Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi film, The Creator, features John David Washington as a soldier tasked with finding and destroying a powerful AI. However, his mission changes when he discovers the AI is actually a young robot child named Alphie, played by Madeleine Yuna Voyles, causing him to question his orders. The film also stars Gemma Chan, Allison Janney, Ken Watanabe, Ralph Ineson, and Benedict Wong.
After being available on different streaming services for the last three years, the movie The Creator is now on Netflix. While Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man and War Machine, starring Alan Ritchson, are currently the most popular titles, The Creator is still performing well. As of today, it’s the eighth most-watched movie on Netflix this week.
‘The Creator’ Is a Breathtaking (& Frustrating) Watch
Gareth Edwards is a director who often delivers stunning visuals, and many consider him a talented filmmaker. While he’s known for creating beautiful movies – like Rogue One, which stands out within its franchise thanks to exceptional special effects – his films often suffer from weak scripts. Both Rogue One and his latest movie, The Creator, had rocky starts but were ultimately saved by strong endings. This pattern of visually impressive work paired with underwhelming storytelling is a common critique of his films.
Director Gareth Edwards’ experience in visual effects allows him to seamlessly integrate CGI and VFX into his filmmaking process. He understands how to film scenes in a way that gives VFX artists everything they need to create stunning visuals. However, with his film The Creator, this focus on visuals overshadowed the story. While The Creator isn’t a poor movie, it prioritizes impressive style over a deeper, more meaningful plot. The film had the potential to explore interesting themes about artificial intelligence and the role of the American military, but ultimately settled for being a visually spectacular, yet fairly standard, sci-fi action movie.
‘The Creator’ Lost Its Oscar to an Unlikely Competitor

I was really excited about The Creator – Gareth Edwards is a fantastic director, and with an $80 million budget, it looked incredible. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects at the Oscars, but honestly, I was blown away when Godzilla Minus One won! That film only cost $15 million to make, which just proves you don’t need a huge amount of money to create something truly special. It was a fantastic win for creativity over cash, and it really showed at the awards ceremony.
