The Conjuring Director’s New Horror Project Will Be His Most Terrifying Drop Yet

In recent years, “The Conjuring” has become one of the most recognizable names in horror. Since the first film came out in 2013, the series – starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson – has consistently performed well in theaters and captivated audiences, many of whom have grown up watching the films and connecting with the characters.

Michael Chaves, the director of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021) and the upcoming The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025), is expanding his creative work. He’s partnering with Skybound and Image Comics, along with artists Matthew Roberts and Rico Renzi, to create a new dark fantasy comic book series called Corpse Knight.

After the success of 2025’s The Conjuring: Last Rites – the highest-grossing film in the Conjuring series so far – director Michael Chaves is creating Corpse Knight, a horror comic with a dark fantasy setting in war-torn France. It will be released on April 22, 2026.

Chaves said he wasn’t planning on returning to the horror genre so quickly, but he highly praised the artistic talent of his collaborator, Matthew Roberts, and the coloring work of Rico Renzi. Roberts is well-known for his work on the Universal Monsters comic series, as well as co-creating and illustrating Manifest Destiny. Renzi is famous for his work on the 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Chaves is exploring comics as a new creative outlet, something he’s said he enjoys. However, visual storytelling isn’t new to him – he recently directed the latest and most successful film in The Conjuring series, effectively concluding the main storyline.

Corpse Knight Will Offer a Different Kind of Horror to Fans of The Conjuring

The Upcoming Series Has Its Horror Rooted in Dark Fantasy

Corpse Knight tells the story of Foy, a young girl whose life is turned upside down when her father mysteriously returns from the dead to protect her. As they journey to challenge powerful, supernatural forces, Foy begins to question if her father was always what he seemed, and if he might be a monster himself.

This new series will be a different kind of horror experience than viewers familiar with The Conjuring might expect from director Chaves. Corpse Knight will focus more on classic dark fantasy elements.

Okay, so Michael Chaves, the guy who really nailed the last two Conjuring movies, is back with something completely new. As a horror fan, I’m already intrigued – this series looks like it’s going to be a must-see!
