In 2025, Colossal Biosciences revealed they had brought back dire wolves—the creatures famously featured in the HBO series Game of Thrones. The first three dire wolves, named Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi, are doing well, and Colossal Biosciences is now working to revive other extinct species.
Colossal, the company known for its de-extinction efforts, revealed plans to build a modern-day Noah’s Ark with support from the United Arab Emirates. At the World Governments Summit on February 2nd, they announced the creation of the Colossal BioVault and World Preservation Lab, a facility dedicated to safeguarding Earth’s biodiversity. This lab will be permanently located at the Museum of the Future in Dubai, as announced by Dubai’s Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
At the Summit, attendees also got a sneak peek at the World Preservation Lab and Colossal BioVault exhibition.
As we’ve discussed before, this project is incredibly expensive. Building a modern-day equivalent of Noah’s Ark – a facility to house and potentially revive extinct species – requires substantial funding. The Colossal BioVault and World Preservation Lab in the UAE is a multi-million dollar undertaking.
Additionally, the UAE invested $60 million in Colossal as the first part of its Series C funding round, increasing the company’s total funding to $615 million.
I’m hearing that this deal is worth a huge amount of money – nine figures! It’s also great to know that Colossal is getting revenue from licensing the technology that makes their cryo and reanimation work possible.
Majed Al Mansoori, Executive Director of the Museum of the Future, stated that he thinks the people who use technology and new ideas to solve big problems will shape the future.
We’re partnering with Colossal Biosciences, experts in synthetic biology and conservation, to make a significant impact on science. This collaboration will help protect our planet, revitalize ecosystems, and create a lasting, positive future.
The announcement highlights a critical need for a Preservation Lab due to the alarming rate of species loss. Experts predict that nearly half of Earth’s species could become extinct by 2050, which would severely impact biodiversity, human health, and the global economy. This lab aims to create a safe, collaborative, and expandable system for preserving life on Earth.
The Colossal BioVault will provide:
- House the Cradle of Life: Protect over 10,000 species and hold more than a million samples, focusing initially on the world’s 100 most imperiled species
- Genetic Diversity Mapping: Collect multiple samples from species to capture population-wide variation
- Open Data Initiative: Share data openly by making all non-proprietary information available to scientists worldwide
- Global BioVault Network: Build a global network of Colossal BioVaults across multiple countries, safeguarding endangered and keystone species, starting in Dubai and the UAE
- Advance Genomic Research: Build high-quality reference genomes for understudied species
- Redundant Backup System: Establish secure storage with redundant backup sites around the world
- Advance the Mission: Invite visitors to take part in the mission, becoming co-custodians of biodiversity, citizen scientists and advocates for its future
Khaleesi Just Celebrated Her First Anniversary
Okay, so this documentary follows the incredible return of dire wolves after being gone for almost 12,500 years! It’s fascinating to watch. We first meet Remus and Romulus, the first two born into this new generation, and then we learn about their little sister – the very first female dire wolf – who arrived just three months later. It’s a really heartwarming story of a species making a comeback.
I was so excited to hear that Queen Khaleesi, the adorable dire wolf, officially turned one on January 30th! Colossal shared the sweetest photos on Instagram, showing her growing up from a tiny pup to the beautiful young wolf she is today. They said she’s growing up so fast – still a bit of a teenager, but quickly catching up to her brothers who celebrated their first birthdays back in October. It feels like just yesterday she was a little baby, and now she’s already getting so big! You really do blink and miss it.
