Ben Barnes, the actor famous for his roles as Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia and Aleksander Kirigan in Shadow and Bone, has been a popular fan pick to play Sirius Black if the character were to be rebooted. Now, as HBO’s new TV series is being filmed, the actor has finally spoken about the possibility of getting the part.
While chatting with fans at the FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention, Barnes reacted positively to the suggestion of portraying a younger Sirius Black. “Yes, this question brings up the lovely idea of fans wanting me to play a young Sirius Black, even though I’m getting closer in age to the original character,” he explained. “That really shows how dedicated the fandom is-they’ve spent years invested in what some might call a fictional story, but honestly, Harry Potter feels very real to me!”
Barnes then discussed his enthusiasm for the project and expressed his joy in playing Sirius. “It’s really wonderful, I think, when people become so connected to a character, even though you weren’t involved in its original creation. The characters are, of course, amazing. And truthfully, if I were to choose a role people would remember me for, it would be this one anyway. That’s a really good feeling.”
He then discussed another well-known Harry Potter fan casting, probably referring to Andrew Garfield. “I wonder, isn’t Andrew Garfield one of those considered? I believe so, as Andrew and I were born on the same day-though I’m a year older,” Barnes continued, praising Garfield’s talent. “I’ve always been impressed with him since I first met him. I’ve seen him perform in several plays, and I just think he’s fantastic.”
Regarding the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series, the role of Sirius Black hasn’t been filled yet – which leaves the possibility open for the internet’s preferred choice, Barnes, to be cast. The current cast list features Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. Joining them in supporting roles are John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, and Nick Frost.
HBO’s Harry Potter Reboot Coming with Controversial Casting Choices
Although fans would be thrilled if Barnes ended up playing Sirius Black, there’s been a lot of discussion about the casting for the new show. Reports recently surfaced that producers were already holding auditions for the part of Lord Voldemort, but with an interesting change. Many online hoped Peaky Blinders actor Cillian Murphy would get the role, but so far, no official announcement has been made.
Murphy recently addressed the casting of Voldemort, offering what some might consider a letdown while still expressing his fondness for the original Harry Potter movies, which featured Ralph Fiennes in the role. He stated, “No. I mean, truly. My children sometimes show me clips, but I tell them, ‘I really don’t have any information on that.'” He added, “Plus, it’s incredibly difficult to keep up with anything Ralph Fiennes does. He’s a phenomenal actor. So, I wish the new actor the best of luck in stepping into that role.”
HBO’s Harry Potter series will premiere sometime in 2027.
