Get ready for The Bride!, a new dark romance coming to cinemas on March 6, 2026. The film features a stellar cast including Buckley, Christian Bale, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz. It’s written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who previously directed the acclaimed 2021 film The Lost Daughter, starring Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley. Here’s a look at what The Bride! is all about:
In 1930s Chicago, a solitary Frankenstein, played by Bale, seeks the help of Dr. Euphronious (Annette Bening), a brilliant scientist, to create a female companion. They successfully bring a young, murdered woman back to life, giving birth to The Bride (Buckley). But their creation unleashes a chain of events far beyond their control – including murder, demonic possession, the rise of a rebellious cultural movement, and a passionate, dangerous love affair.
‘The Bride!’ Puts the Titular Monster Back Into Focus
Maggie Gyllenhaal recently told Entertainment Weekly she’s reimagining The Bride of Frankenstein to give the character more depth. She noticed the Bride had very little screen time in the 1935 film – “five minutes at most” – and wanted to create a story where the Bride takes center stage. When The Bride! arrives in theaters in March, viewers will see a more fully developed Bride, “who comes back to life with a lot to say.”
The film briefly shows us the woman’s life before she’s resurrected as the Bride. It feels very much like a myth, and she represents a lot of different women. Before her revival, we see her facing difficult situations, tolerating them with quiet strength. But when she returns, she’s driven by a powerful need to assert herself.
Perhaps many women feel this way – a deep need to express themselves. I certainly do, and I see it in actresses like Jessie Buckley and historical figures like Mary Shelley. Shelley, in particular, found strength and inspiration from the women who came before her, even those who were gone. It’s like she was reborn with a powerful voice, and that really resonates with me.
