Be warned, this article contains spoilers for episode 7 of The Boys season 5, titled “The Frenchman, the Female, and the Man Called Mother’s Milk.” Marvin, known to most as MM or M, has been an important character in The Boys since the beginning. However, the show has always kept the story behind his nickname, Mother’s Milk, a secret – until now.
The latest episode of The Boys finally explained the origin of Mother’s Milk’s nickname, and the story behind it was quite surprising. While his full name is Marvin T. Milk – explaining the ‘MM’ abbreviation – the nickname actually comes from a childhood experience he shared with Starlight.
Okay, so I was really surprised by how different Mother’s Milk acted in season 5 of The Boys. He totally shifted gears and seemed genuinely hopeful, and it was all about trying to reach Starlight. He shared this really vulnerable story about his childhood – how tough it was after his grandfather was killed by Soldier Boy, and how he was constantly picked on and bullied because of it. It was a huge moment for his character, showing a side of him we hadn’t really seen before.
He found an injured pigeon and decided to care for it, hoping that saving a life would somehow ease the pain of his grandfather’s passing. When the kids who used to bother him learned about this, they started calling him “Mother’s Milk” as a way to make fun of him.
MM was known for being incredibly persistent, but even he was surprised when the very thing he’d been chasing – a seemingly lost cause – recovered and thrived. He didn’t mind the nickname he’d earned; in fact, he welcomed it. Helping others was important to him, and he felt the name represented his caring nature and brought honor to his family.
The show saved this backstory for the perfect time. After the events of episode 6 in The Boys season 5 left Starlight feeling defeated, learning about her origins gave her the push she needed. While different from the comic books, the reveal was ultimately satisfying and impactful.
How MM’s Nickname In Prime Video’s The Boys Compares To The Comic
I love how the show really fleshed out the story behind Mother’s Milk’s nickname! It adds so much meaning to his character, which is way more interesting than the simple explanation in the comics. Honestly, the comic book origin was pretty blunt, and I get why the showrunners toned things down. The source material gets really dark, and while I’m curious, I can see why they left some of the more shocking stuff out for the TV adaptation.
A significant change from the original comics was deciding not to give Mother’s Milk superpowers. In the source material, he was born with abilities, and while the whole team eventually gained powers, Mother’s Milk uniquely had a lifelong supply of the power-enhancing Compound V in his system, effectively making him immortal. However, there was a strange requirement: he needed to continue drinking his mother’s breast milk to keep his powers active.
This odd detail only fits within the world of The Boys, and it wouldn’t really work on the TV show, particularly given Homelander’s existing interest in breast milk. However, this is actually how the character ‘MM’ earned his nickname in the comics – it’s a straightforward explanation that at least feels logical.
The show’s reason for this character’s nickname feels a bit forced compared to the comic book version, though it does try to give it some weight. While the character’s personality is consistent across both versions, the fact that he never uses Compound V in the live-action series highlights how much his story differs.
It makes sense that sticking strictly to the comics wouldn’t always work for The Boys, and changing the story of Mother’s Milk’s past – specifically how he got involved with Compound V – meant they also had to change why he earned his nickname. Luckily, this new backstory actually improves the character and clarifies his unwavering dedication to helping the team.
While Mother’s Milk hasn’t always been completely focused on the mission, especially during season 5, he’s managed to survive and remains a vital member of the team. It’s uncertain if he’ll make it through the final episodes of The Boys, but we’ve at least learned the story behind his nickname and why it matters.
