The Bloodiest & Raunchiest TV Show in History Is Exploding on PVOD (& It Will Get a Sequel Soon)

Look, when people talk about shows with a lot of violence and adult content, Game of Thrones is usually the first thing that pops into my head. It definitely didn’t hold back – it was super bloody, brutal, and, let’s just say, very explicit. But honestly, another show was doing that kind of thing a full year earlier!

While both shows share common ground, Game of Thrones incorporated fantasy elements, whereas Spartacus stayed true to historical events. Spartacus originally premiered in 2010 and became a major franchise, with a new series, Spartacus: House of Ashur, coming soon. As the new series approaches its early next month release, FlixPatrol reports that Spartacus is once again topping the charts on digital platforms.

The new series Spartacus quickly rose to fourth place on the iTunes charts when it premiered on November 22nd. It followed closely behind PBS’s The American Revolution documentary, the returning series One Tree Hill, and Landman by Taylor Sheridan.

The historical drama series began on Starz in 2010, created by Steven S. DeKnight. The first season, called Spartacus: Blood and Sand, starred Andy Whitfield in the lead role. After Whitfield sadly passed away in 2011, the show returned in 2012 with a second season, Spartacus: Vengeance, featuring Liam McIntyre as Spartacus.

The show came back in 2013 with Season 3, called Spartacus: War of the Damned, which concluded the original series and featured Andy McIntyre reprising his role as Spartacus. Before that, while the lead actor, Andy Whitfield, was battling cancer, a limited series called Spartacus: Gods of the Arena was released.

Whether it featured gladiatorial combat or served to emphasize a narrative point, Spartacus was known for its striking and often brutal visuals. The show didn’t shy away from violence, frequently depicting it with slow-motion blood sprays, gruesome deaths, and scenes of stabbing and decapitation.

Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics – a 52% ‘rotten’ score based on 23 reviews – the first season of Spartacus was a hit with viewers, earning an 88% audience approval rating. Remarkably, it remains popular even today, 15 years after its release.

What Happens in Spartacus: House of Ashur?

While the original Spartacus story has concluded, the franchise is getting a fresh start. The new series will rewrite history, bringing back Spartacus even after his death in the initial storyline. A recent teaser revealed that Ashur will also return, getting a second chance at life in this new reality. This time, he’s the one who defeats Spartacus and builds his own gladiatorial house, but he struggles to assemble a team as fearsome as before, creating an opportunity for him to rise to power.

The new season features returning writer Steven S. DeKnight, along with familiar faces Nick E. Tarabay as Ashur and Lucy Lawless as Lucretia. It will also introduce new characters, including Gaius Julius Caesar (played by Jackson Gallagher) and his wife, Cordelia (Jaime Slater), plus a formidable female gladiator.

You can now rent or buy Spartacus online. The new season, Spartacus: House of Ashur, will begin streaming on STARZ with the first two episodes on December 5th.
