As a huge TV fan, I’ve always thought HBO was in a league of its own. They’ve consistently delivered incredible shows – I mean, think about classics like The Wire and The Sopranos, or even something like Sex and the City that really broke the mold. And even with so many other streaming services now offering great content, HBO just keeps releasing shows that are truly exceptional.
The five-episode series first aired in 2019 and continues to resonate with viewers. Even though it’s been several years since it concluded, people are still watching Chernobyl, which currently ranks as the seventh most popular show on Amazon’s streaming platforms, gaining renewed attention in the U.S. this week.
The show also gained traction on the Apple TV store in Australia and France, climbing to sixth place. Simultaneously, it hit number four in Canada’s Apple TV store.
The five-episode historical drama first appeared on HBO Max on May 6, 2019, and quickly became a hit. Critics and viewers loved its actors, how accurately it portrayed real events, its connection to today’s world, and its beautiful visuals. Chernobyl received 19 award nominations and won the prize for Outstanding Limited Series.
This series tells the story of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster and its consequences, focusing on the courageous individuals who worked to contain the damage after the nuclear accident.
While Chernobyl wasn’t a completely factual retelling of events, it was widely praised for its compelling portrayal of the disaster and its aftermath. The series particularly emphasized the Soviet government’s attempts to conceal the truth and didn’t shy away from showing how they mishandled the situation.
Critics and viewers overwhelmingly praised the series on Rotten Tomatoes. It received a 95% approval rating based on 102 reviews, with many highlighting its ability to build a constant sense of dread and its powerful, intelligent portrayal of the disaster and the systemic issues that contributed to it.
Viewers overwhelmingly loved the historical series, giving it a 97% approval rating. They especially appreciated the performances, the way the story was told, and how accurately it depicted the past.
I was so blown away by Chernobyl! Seriously, it’s one of the best things I’ve seen in years – that five-part HBO series was just fantastic. I can’t recommend it enough!
The miniseries Chernobyl features a talented cast including Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson, Paul Ritter, Jessie Buckley, and Adam Nagaitis.
Chernobyl Is Perfect for The Last of Us Fans
Despite some criticism from viewers of its second season – though critics generally liked it – The Last of Us remains a very popular show. A third season is planned, but fans will have to wait a while for it.
There are a few key connections between the two titles. Both were created by Craig Mazin and produced by HBO. Mazin teamed up with Neil Druckmann, a co-president of the game developer Naughty Dog and co-creator of The Last of Us games, to write and develop the show.
As a huge fan of both of these shows, what really struck me was how they both tackle these massive disasters – one with a devastating nuclear accident and the other with a terrifying zombie virus. They’re both incredibly well-made, with really compelling characters and amazing acting. But beyond that, they both explore how people and society as a whole cope with the fallout from something truly shocking and historic. It’s not just about the disaster itself, but the aftermath that really gets you thinking.
