The mystery genre, long loved thanks to authors like Agatha Christie and P.D. James, has recently become hugely popular with teens and in various forms of media. Mystery shows aimed at teens need to be complex, with plenty of surprising twists to keep younger viewers hooked. When secrets and murder are added to the mix, this exciting type of mystery quickly appeals to audiences of all ages.
This show is a captivating mystery that will keep you hooked until the very end, thanks to its clever plot and interesting characters. As streaming services offer more and more content, shows are increasingly blending mystery with other genres, like thrillers, comedies, and even fantasy. Teen mystery shows, in particular, have become hugely popular with a wide range of viewers – but which ones truly stand out?
Gossip Girl Changed the Course of the Teen Mystery Genre
Even though it originally aired in the 2000s, Gossip Girl remains a popular and interesting show. It follows the lives of privileged teenagers on New York City’s Upper East Side, and explores how they navigate complex family issues while striving for social status and power.
Though many see Gossip Girl as simply a teen romance, it’s actually a show filled with social drama, surprising secrets, and unexpected turns. The biggest question throughout the series is who Gossip Girl really is, but each season also features smaller stories about the characters’ complicated pasts, the conflicts between them, and their constant attempts to outdo one another.
Teen Wolf Explores the Werewolf Myth in a High School Scenario
While vampires dominate teen movies and TV, werewolf stories are less common. Teen Wolf breaks away from typical high school tropes when Scott, a normally unnoticed student, is bitten by a werewolf, inheriting an age-old curse. This curse throws his life and Beacon Hills High School into turmoil. The show cleverly blends supernatural events with everyday high school drama, offering a fresh take on the werewolf legend.
One of the biggest drawbacks of Teen Wolf is its less-than-impressive special effects, especially in the first few seasons. Thankfully, the visuals improve as the series goes on, making it easier to get lost in the story. Each season features multiple ongoing mysteries and introduces a variety of supernatural creatures, like Wendigos, Druids, and Banshees. The show is also well-known for helping launch Dylan O’Brien’s career; he plays Stiles, a character who quickly became a favorite among viewers.
Outer Banks Is a Treasure Hunt TV Show
Set on the North Carolina coast, Outer Banks centers around a group of teenagers led by John B, who are determined to find a legendary treasure and uncover the truth behind his father’s disappearance. The Netflix series blends a captivating mystery with the familiar themes of class differences and a warm, coastal vibe, reminiscent of early 2000s shows, but adds an exciting treasure hunt to the mix.
Outer Banks doesn’t try to reinvent the teen mystery formula, but its story about a group of teenagers searching for treasure – even when it gets a bit wild – keeps things surprisingly unpredictable. What starts as a local problem quickly escalates into a chase involving police from multiple states and a high-stakes hunt for a fortune in gold.
Veronica Mars Is a Coming-of-Age Detective Story
I absolutely loved Veronica Mars! It was such a unique show – a teen drama with a real mystery at its heart. It followed Veronica, a normal high schooler who suddenly had to become a detective when her best friend was murdered. That tragedy completely changed her life, pulling her into a world of secrets and crime as she desperately tried to find out who killed her friend. It was so gripping!
Veronica Mars is a compelling show focused on the life of Veronica, who juggles school with her work as a detective. The show features a rich cast of supporting characters who are both intriguing and secretive, contributing to the show’s atmosphere of suspense. After gaining popularity, a movie was released in 2014, and the series was briefly revived with a new season in 2019, bringing back fan favorites.
Dark Is a Mind-Bending Teen Mystery with Multiple Timelines
The series Dark begins with a suicide and a missing child, events that kick off a disturbing story about time travel. It quickly focuses on a group of teenagers who become entangled in a complex mystery spanning generations and involving terrible crimes. Compared to other teen mysteries, Dark is particularly grim and unsettling. Set in a German town seemingly destined for disaster, the show features a complicated network of interconnected timelines and family histories.
Though the story is primarily told through the eyes of teenagers, Dark features multiple versions of these characters traveling through time and uncovering a sinister plot. No matter the era, their impulsive actions consistently cause trouble across time and space. Dark is a complex but concise teen mystery, and it ultimately provides a well-considered conclusion.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Marked a Generation
Buffy the Vampire Slayer changed the landscape of teen television by mixing high school life with stories about vampires and the supernatural. The show appeals to both younger and older viewers, and centers on Buffy Summers, a teenager who is chosen to fight vampires, as she joins forces with a group of unlikely friends to save the world from darkness.
While Buffy the Vampire Slayer is often celebrated for its action, a sense of mystery is always present throughout the series. Each season features an overarching villain, but Buffy also presents thrilling, self-contained mysteries involving a variety of creatures, like demons and werewolves. The show further blends these cases with classic teen themes such as vampire romance, witchcraft, and high school life.
Pretty Little Liars Lays Out a Complicated Web of Lies and Secrets
The TV show Pretty Little Liars, based on the books by Sara Shepard, centers around four friends haunted by someone who knows their secrets after their friend Allison goes missing. This anonymous stalker, known only as “A”, keeps them constantly on edge. The show is a complex mystery filled with secrets, relationships, and even murder, offering a more mature take on typical teen dramas.
The show became more complex and occasionally scary as it went on, but it’s remembered as one of the greatest teen mystery series ever made. Its recent update reimagines the central mystery for today’s digital world.
Riverdale Added a Mysterious Twist to Archie Comics
Despite some confusing plotlines, the show’s first season was excellent, skillfully blending teen romance and suspense. It took the familiar characters from Archie Comics and combined them with a mysterious, David Lynch-style murder plot, creating a really engaging teen mystery series.
The first season of Riverdale revolves around the investigation into Jason Blossom’s death, with Betty, Archie, Veronica, and Jughead all becoming suspects. The show does a great job of making each Archie Comics character seem like a possible killer, all while also developing their personalities, relationships, and friendships. It’s disappointing that later seasons of the show didn’t maintain this same high quality.
Cruel Summer Is Full of Secrets and Drama
As a huge fan of twisty thrillers, I was completely hooked by Cruel Summer. It centers around a missing girl and the one who appears to be living her life, unfolding over three summers. The first season wrapped things up nicely, but Season 2 threw us right back into the drama with a fresh mystery – this time, a ’90s-set love triangle that sadly ends in murder. It’s a really compelling watch!
The series Cruel Summer keeps viewers guessing as the hidden truths about each character come to light. While the show skillfully navigates multiple timelines across both seasons, its complex mysteries, though engaging, weren’t enough to overcome high production costs, ultimately leading to its cancellation despite a dedicated fanbase.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Played With the Occult
Inspired by the classic Archie comics, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina tells the story of Sabrina Spellman, who is trying to balance her life as a normal teenager with her training as a witch. This popular Netflix series is a standout in the world of witchy TV, blending horror, mystery, and the challenges of growing up. As Sabrina approaches her sixteenth birthday, she must make a difficult decision: fully embrace her magical destiny or choose a human life with her boyfriend, Harvey Kinkle.
Despite lasting only two seasons (divided into four parts), Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was a popular show on Netflix. Its cancellation was a letdown for many viewers who were hoping for more. The series offered a unique and entertaining take on witchcraft stories, blending dark themes with humor, and featured a talented cast.
