The Best Dracula Movie of the Decade (That Everyone Slept On) Is Quietly Climbing the Global Streaming Charts 5 Years Later

A lesser-known Dracula film is gaining popularity and attracting a lot of attention on a major streaming service.

According to FlixPatrol, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is now the seventh most popular movie on Netflix. While it’s still behind films like The Great Flood and Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story, it appears to be holding steady in its current position.

Directed by André Øvredal and written by Bragi Schut Jr. and Zak Olkewicz, The Last Voyage of the Demeter tells the story of the doomed ship of the same name. Corey Hawkins stars as Clemens, a doctor on board. The film, set in 1897, follows the ship’s crew and passengers as they sail from Bulgaria to England and are terrorized by Dracula, who is hiding somewhere on board.

Starring alongside David Hawkins, The Last Voyage of the Demeter features Aisling Franciosi as Anna, a hidden passenger, Liam Cunningham as Captain Eliot, and David Dastmalchian as Wojchek, the ship’s quartermaster. Woody Norman plays Eliot’s grandson, Toby, Jon Jon Briones is the ship’s cook Joseph, and Javier Botet portrays the terrifying Dracula. The cast also includes Stefan Kapičić, Martin Furulund, Nicolo Pasetti, Chris Walley, Sally Reeve, and Nikolai Nikolaeff.

When The Last Voyage of the Demeter came out in 2023, it received negative reviews from both critics and general audiences, hindering its performance in theaters. Ultimately, the film only earned $21.8 million at the box office, despite costing $45 million to make.

Currently, reviews for The Last Voyage of the Demeter are mixed, with a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 200 critic reviews. However, audiences seem to enjoy it more, giving it a 73% score on the site, based on over 500 user ratings.

How One Legendary Filmmaker Helped The Last Voyage of the Demeter Set Sail

As a big horror fan, I was really interested in The Last Voyage of the Demeter when it came out last year. I recently read an interview with the director, André Øvredal, and he talked about Guillermo del Toro being involved early on. Apparently, del Toro was just swamped with Nightmare Alley and Pinocchio while Øvredal was making Demeter. He said they had some fantastic initial conversations that were super helpful in shaping the film, even though del Toro couldn’t stay on board throughout the whole process.

Working with him on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark taught me a great deal – I felt like I understood his approach to filmmaking completely. I especially learned about the importance of carefully crafting a story and seeing a movie as a whole, and his way of thinking is truly remarkable, Øvredal explained.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
