The Best DC Show Of All Time Is Coming Back

Fans of The Penguin series are likely feeling one thing: relief. The eight-episode show, created for HBO Max, was incredibly popular. Its success led Matt Reeves, who also directs The Batman movies, to confirm that the Penguin character will appear in The Batman Part II, which is scheduled to come out in theaters on October 1, 2027.

Fans have been waiting a long time to see Colin Farrell return as The Penguin, but it looks like they won’t have to wait another two years. According to Bloomberg, a second season of the show – which was discussed as early as November 2024 after the first season ended – is now officially being developed.

James Gunn and producer Peter Safran are mapping out the next decade of DC superhero films and shows. They began with ‘Superman’ this July, and have several projects planned, including movies focusing on Supergirl and Clayface next year. They’re also developing sequels to ‘Superman’ and ‘The Batman’ for 2027, another season of ‘The Penguin,’ and a true-crime series centered around the villain Gorilla Grodd. Gunn will begin filming the new ‘Superman’ in April, while Matt Reeves will start shooting the next ‘Batman’ movie in May.

DC Studios co-head Peter Safran recently told Bloomberg about the studio’s goals. He shared this vision back in November 2025, before Netflix’s offer was finalized, and emphasized the importance of sticking to that plan.

When we started this job, our main goal was to make DC the best it could be – a true standout. We’ve really only just begun to make progress towards that.

This all builds on the incredible success of the 2025 Superman film, which has paved the way for several upcoming projects. We can expect Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow on HBO Max in 2026, followed by the blockbuster Superman: Man of Tomorrow in 2027. The Batman Part II is also in the works, though it exists outside the main DC Universe, it will still be overseen by James Gunn. Plus, an exciting standalone series focusing on Gorilla Grodd is also planned.

The Penguin Should Be Unbothered by Netflix

As Safran suggests, this points to a promising future for DC Studios and leaves the possibility open for The Penguin to return for a second season, even with Netflix’s upcoming acquisition. The series’ success with both viewers and critics makes a renewal seem highly likely. It received over a dozen industry awards and numerous nominations, with Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti—who gave an outstanding performance as Sofia Falcone—receiving significant praise and accolades.

Look, Gunn, Safran, and Reeves really need to get the original cast back if they want to do another big event. Honestly, I have no idea where the story could go next, but I’m excited to find out!

In an interview with Deadline last May, The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc explained that a second season would only happen if they could develop a story that surpassed the completeness of Season 1. It seems they’ve now found a way to do just that, which is great news for fans.

The Penguin is currently streaming on HBO Max, and is available for purchase on 4K Blu-Ray.
