Just a heads-up for anyone who hasn’t finished the latest season of The Amazing Race – I’m about to talk about what happened, so consider yourself warned! I’m a big fan and excited to discuss it, but don’t want to ruin it for those still watching.
In the latest episode of The Amazing Race, Rubina and Kristine Bernabe were eliminated. Before leaving, Rubina surprised everyone – and host Phil Keoghan – when asked who she wanted to win. Instead of naming her boyfriend, Tucker Des Lauriers, she said Izzy Gleicher was her pick to win the whole competition.
Rubina and Tucker are no longer a couple, but they dated after meeting on Season 26 of Big Brother, and their relationship was a storyline on The Amazing Race. That’s why it was surprising to hear Rubina didn’t want Tucker or his brother Eric to win the million-dollar prize, although she explained her reasoning in an interview with Gold Derby.
It was clear this man expected me to say ‘Tucker,’ but I stand by my choice. Ultimately, I want to support women, because we consistently face an uphill battle. I experience that myself, and it’s been a long time since a team of women has achieved victory. For me, it’s about sending a powerful message: women are capable of anything. And I’m not going to apologize for wanting to see them succeed – I’m done with women feeling the need to apologize for their ambitions.
Rubina and her sister are huge fans of The Amazing Race – she even talked about wanting to be on the show while still competing on Big Brother! It’s been a while since a team of all women won – the last time was in Season 25 with Amy DeJong and Maya Warren. Considering that, I understand why Rubina said what she did to Phil Keoghan.

Sydney Sweeney expressed her desire to participate in The Amazing Race with The White Lotus director, Mike White. White responded with a fantastic suggestion, showing his enthusiasm for the idea.
Looking back, Rubina probably feels good she didn’t publicly say she wanted Tucker to win. The reality star, who was on TV before Big Brother, also mentioned in the same interview that she was fine with sharing that she and Tucker had broken up, even though the show’s online feeds led fans to believe they’d stay together.
Unfortunately, Rubina Bernabe didn’t win, but she greatly enjoyed competing on The Amazing Race with her sister Kristina. They grew up watching the show with their mother, who sadly passed away in 2018. The sisters felt their shared experience caring for their mother actually strengthened their teamwork and helped them do well in Season 38. While they could have gone further, starting the leg in last place put them at a disadvantage, as they didn’t encounter any other teams along the way.
Jag and Jas Bains are still the most likely team to win The Amazing Race, but Tucker and Eric Des Lauriers have been performing well lately and could potentially win as a surprise. It’s getting tougher for Rubina Bernabe, as there are fewer and fewer all-female teams left in the competition, but it will be interesting to see if any of them can still make a strong push for the finish line.
You can still catch new episodes of The Amazing Race on CBS Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. Eastern. As a big Big Brother fan, I’m really enjoying this season, and I’m looking forward to hearing what longtime Amazing Race viewers think once it concludes.
