As a Nintendo fan, I’ll always remember the Nintendo 64 as the console that really brought their games into the 3D world. It didn’t have a huge library – less than 300 games came out for it – but even with that smaller selection, it gave us some truly amazing titles that people still play and love today!
The Nintendo 64 has a fantastic library of games, featuring both Nintendo-made hits like The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and excellent games from other companies, such as Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. These games really highlight how the N64 marked a new beginning for Nintendo.
Conker’s Bad Fur Day Proved the N64 Wasn’t Just for Kids
Conker’s Bad Fur Day is a wild action-adventure game where the main character, a squirrel named Conker, finds himself in trouble after a night of heavy drinking. He wakes up lost and has to make his way home, facing bizarre and often inappropriate challenges like creepy bees and, yes, even singing poop!
Everyone remembers Conker’s Bad Fur Day for its mature content, but it’s easy to overlook the fact that it was originally designed as a challenging platformer for skilled players. Once you get the hang of the controls, especially the buttons that change depending on the situation, Conker’s Bad Fur Day is genuinely fun to play.
Donkey Kong 64 Kept the Franchise On a High
Donkey Kong 64 was the first and only 3D Donkey Kong game for many years, until Donkey Kong Bananza was released in 2025. The game follows Donkey Kong as he tries to save his family from King K. Rool, who has been a recurring villain in the series.
As a huge DK fan, I love how each of his friends – Diddy, Chunky, Tiny, and Lanky – brings something totally different to the table. They each have special moves that really help you get through certain parts of the levels. Okay, sometimes switching between them and going back over old ground can be a little repetitive, but honestly, their unique abilities are what keep the gameplay fresh and make it so much fun!
Star Fox 64 Introduced Gamers to an Iconic Line
In Star Fox 64, Andross is out for revenge on the Lylat system after being defeated by Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team in a previous battle. Although Andross seems to have the advantage this time, Fox and his crew are determined to fight back.
Star Fox 64 significantly improved upon the gameplay of the original Star Fox, offering a much smoother and more polished 3D experience. It introduced voice acting, giving us the famous line “Do a barrel roll,” and also allowed players to use the Rumble Pak for added immersion. Overall, it’s a more captivating and action-packed game than its predecessor.
F-Zero X Is One of the Toughest N64 Games Ever
Okay, so F-Zero X is this super-fast racing game set way in the future. You pick from a bunch of different racers – I always go with Captain Falcon, naturally – and basically just try to win. Seriously, it’s fast. Like, really, really fast. Just staying on the track is a challenge sometimes, but that’s what makes it so awesome!
Considering how fast-paced it is, it’s not surprising that F-Zero X remains a popular racing game. But beyond that, it’s incredibly exciting, and that high speed keeps players engaged for a long time, even if they don’t usually play racing games.
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter Stood Out in the N64’s Library
In the first-person shooter Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, players take on the role of Turok, a time-traveling warrior. He must stop alien invaders who are threatening to destroy the universe and unravel the fabric of time and reality.
Among Nintendo 64 first-person shooters, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter stands out as one of the best, especially because it wasn’t made by Nintendo themselves. Even today, the gameplay feels solid, and it’s surprisingly fun to battle both dinosaurs and people.
Banjo-Kazooie Is the N64’s Cult Classic Platformer

For years, Banjo-Kazooie was an overlooked gem on the Nintendo 64, but it’s recently gained the recognition it deserves. Praised for its funny moments, smart challenges, and well-crafted worlds, both Banjo-Kazooie and its follow-up, Banjo-Tooie, are considered among Rare’s finest games on Nintendo platforms.
Super Smash Bros. Kicked Off One of Nintendo’s Best Franchises
Super Smash Bros. is a fighting game where famous characters from Nintendo, like Mario, Link, and Pikachu, compete against each other in an arena.
What started as a small, fun project, Super Smash Bros. quickly became popular thanks to the surprisingly enjoyable chaos of seeing beloved characters battle each other. While newer versions have added even more fighters – even from companies other than Nintendo, like Solid Snake – the original game remains a classic and is still fun to play.
Perfect Dark Is the Perfect N64 FPS
Okay, so I was playing Perfect Dark the other day, and it’s seriously cool. You play as Joanna Dark, a secret agent, and the game takes place way in the future – 2023, which felt so far off when it came out! Basically, I had to sneak into this place called dataDyne to find a scientist, Dr. Caroll. But things get weird fast – turns out the doctor isn’t exactly what he seems. It’s a really strange mission, and that’s just the start of it!
The game’s story mode is excellent, building suspense with its focus on sneaking around. The multiplayer is just as impressive, delivering fast-paced and exciting matches. Whether you prefer playing alone, with a friend locally, or online, Perfect Dark consistently delivers a top-notch experience.
Majora’s Mask Made the Zelda Franchise Darker Than Ever
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask continues the story right after Ocarina of Time. However, instead of the colorful Hyrule players remember, this game takes place in the darker and more unsettling world of Termina, where a giant moon threatens to fall from the sky.
The somewhat gloomy atmosphere might not appeal to everyone, but Majora’s Mask is truly special. What makes it stand out is its time-loop feature: playing the Song of Time allows you to reset the three-day cycle. This not only lets you explore more of the world, but also gives you extra time to prevent the moon from crashing down.
Super Mario 64 Sold Gamers on the N64
In Super Mario 64, Mario enters Princess Peach’s castle hoping to have dinner with her, only to discover Bowser has invaded and captured her. To rescue Peach and fix the castle, Mario needs to collect Power Stars.
Super Mario 64 was a groundbreaking game, being the first in the series to move into 3D. It offered a level of freedom never before seen in a Mario title, with each of the worlds accessed through paintings feeling unique and different. The game was a massive success for the Nintendo 64 and continues to influence game design today.
