The horror classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is getting a revival. A24 won a competitive bidding process and now owns the rights to the franchise. They’re planning both a TV series, with Glen Powell and writer JT Mollner (known for The Long Walk), and a new movie to continue the story of Leatherface.
I was reading over at Variety that Taylor Kitsch is really building up his work behind the camera! He’s executive producing alongside Dan Cohen, his partner at Barnstorm Productions. It sounds like he’s serious about producing – he’s got a deal with Universal after Twisters did so well, and he’s constantly adding new projects to Barnstorm, like a sci-fi thriller he just picked up for Amazon. But honestly, what really got me excited was hearing him say The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of his “favorite” films. He shared that in a statement about his latest producing gig, and it just shows he has great taste!
I’m a big fan of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It really set the standard for horror movies and, even after all these years, it’s still a classic film representing my home state. I’m thrilled Barnstorm is involved in creating a new installment of this iconic franchise. Having it with a great studio like A24 and a talented director in JT Mollner, plus our amazing producing partners, makes this a dream come true for such a fantastic property.
Joining the production of the upcoming horror series are Roy Lee and Steven Schneider from Spooky Pictures, who have worked with the series creator before on projects like Strange Darling and The Long Walk. Also producing are Stuart Manashil, Ben Ross of Image Nation, and Kim Henkel of Exurbia Films – the co-writer of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre from 1974. Kim Henkel’s son, Ian Henkel, and Pat Cassidy from Exurbia Films will also be involved. A movie version is also being planned with the same producers, along with Image Nation, but the series creator isn’t involved in that project, as he’s focused on the TV show.
