Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Yellowstone’ Spin-Off Gets Last Minute Change That Seems Pretty Pointless

CBS’s new series, a spin-off of Yellowstone, is likely getting a name change just before its March 1st debut. Originally announced in May 2025 with a title including the letter ‘Y’, it appears the show will now drop that letter as the Yellowstone universe expands to platforms beyond Paramount+.

This new series is closely linked to Yellowstone, centering around Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes. Several familiar faces from Yellowstone return, including Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty, and Brecken Merrill, and they’re joined by new cast members like Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, and Logan Marshall-Green. The show follows Kayce Dutton, a former Navy SEAL and rancher, as he joins a team of U.S. Marshals tasked with protecting Montana. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series wasn’t renamed to distance it from Yellowstone – the original title was simply a working title all along.

The show will still feature its iconic symbol in artwork and throughout the episodes, but it’s getting a simpler title: just Marshals. This isn’t unusual – many shows and movies have had to deal with public confusion over how their titles are styled, with PR teams constantly working to ensure correct capitalization, use of hyphens, and other details.

Taylor Sheridan’s Universe Is Expanding Without Him

Paramount+

Westerns have long been a favorite among audiences, and we’ve seen a surge in popularity over the last ten years, largely due to the success of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone. Though Sheridan has created several successful shows including the Yellowstone spin-offs 1883 and 1923, and other Paramount+ series like Landman, Tulsa King, and Lioness, he won’t be heavily involved in the new series Marshals.

The latest installment of the series definitely explores new territory for Sheridan’s characters, but it remains to be seen if it can maintain its popularity without his direct involvement. He’s stepped in to course-correct other shows in the past when they struggled, but with his contract with Paramount ending, he likely won’t be as available to do so this time.

I’m still really excited about everything Taylor Sheridan has planned for the Yellowstone universe! Besides the main show, there’s so much more coming. We’re expecting Dutton Ranch – though the title might change – and The Madison, plus a bunch of other prequel stories like 1923. Things have been quiet about a lot of these shows lately, but thankfully they haven’t been cancelled – they’re still being worked on, which is great news!
